GOUCHER SPOILS BASSETT HOMECOMING IN DOUBLE OVERTIME
BALTIMORE, MD -- Gary Decker scored the game-winning goal in
double-overtime on a penalty kick as host Goucher College spoiled the
homecoming of King's first-year head Mark Bassett with a 3-2 victory
Monday in Baltimore.
With the win, Goucher improved to 3-2 on the year while King's slipped
to 1-3. Bassett served as an assistant coach at Goucher last
year before becoming the Monarch head coach in July.
The Monarchs jumped out to a quick start when Ryan Symons scored just
0:51 into the match off an assist from Brandon Heller. Goucher
would knot the score at 21:52 when Galen Guindon converted a pass by
Eddie Emokpae.
King's would take the lead when Jordan Miller struck net on an
unassisted goal at 35:03 as the Monarchs entered the halftime break with
a 2-1 advantage.
Goucher, however, would score the last goal of regulation, an unassisted
tally at the 75:44 mark. Neither team would score over the final 14:16
of regulation and over the first 10-minute overtime period.
In the second overtime frame, officials ruled Decker was fouled inside
the box and promptly converted the winning goal at 1:04.41.
Goucher outshot King's 17-10 and held an 8-3 lead in corner kicks.
King's goalie John McNichol made five saves while Goucher keeper Justin
Holbrook posted four stops.
King's returns to action Wednesday when the Monarchs host Ramapo College
at 3:30 p.m. at Betzler Fields.
