MONARCH SOCCER TEAM FALLS TO POWERFUL MONTCLAIR, 3-0
WILKES-BARRE -- Host Montclair State University used a penalty kick late
in the first half to take a 1-0 half-time lead, then added two more
goals in the second half to post a 3-0 victory over visiting King's
College in the finals of the Wellesley Cup Sunday in Upper Montclair, NJ.
Montclair State, a traditional power in the renowned New Jersey Athletic
Conference, improved to 2-0 on the year while the Monarchs fell to 1-2.
With the first half winding down, Montclair scored the only goal it
would need when Mike Hogan scored on a penalty kick with 7:21 remaining
in the first half.
The Monarchs would remain within striking distance until Ryan Morgan's
goal with 13:14 remaining in the contest. The Red Hawks added an
insurance goal when Ilyas Tasci scored with 2:56 to seal the victory for
Montclair.
The Red Hawks outshot King's 19-9 and held a 5-3 advantage in corner
kicks. King's goalie Dan Upton made five saves on the day.
The Monarchs will return to action Wednesday when King's travels to
Dallas to face College Misericordia in a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
