SHIPE'S HAT TRICK PROPELS KING'S TO OVERTIME WIN VS. WILLIAM PATERSON
IN WELLESLEY CUP OPENER
WAYNE, NJ - Senior Brett Shipe scored all three goals, including the
game winner in overtime as the visiting King's College men's soccer team
posted a 3-2 overtime victory over host William Paterson College
in the first round of the Wellesley Cup Saturday in Wayne, NJ.
With the win, King's improved to 1-1 on the year.
King's took a 1-0 lead when Shipe scored off an assist from Dan Gibbons
at 26:30 of the first half. The Monarchs extended the advantage to 2-0
when Shipe struck net on the strength of an assist from Mark Wallis with
13:53 remaining in the first half.
In the second stanza, William Paterson answered when Ryan Hughes scored
on an assist from Jay Hooper with 7:35 remaining. The Pioneers then sent
the game into overtime when Carlos Moreira scored a dramatic unassisted
goal with just 0:46 left in regulation.
The teams would play what appeared to be a scoreless first over time but
Shipe ended the game suddenly when he scored the winning goal off a lead
pass from Jordan Miller with just 0:37 left in the first overtime frame.
William Paterson outshot King's 16-9 while the Monarchs held a 5-1
advantage in corner kicks. King's goalie Danny Roth made five saves in
net.
King's will play at Montclair State Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
