KING'S MEN'S SOCCER OUTLASTS BAPTIST BIBLE

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College men's soccer team overcame two first-half deficits and held on for a 5-4 victory over visiting Baptist Bible College Tuesday at Betzler Fields.

Robbie Atkins gave Baptist Bible a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 24:18 mark of the first half. King's knotted the score at 12:20 when Brett Shipe struck net off an assist from Brandon Heller. Chad Wampler put the Defenders ahead 2-1 with 9:21 remaining in the half, but the Monarchs responded when Dan Gibbons scored off an assist from Mike McGarry on a direct kick with 3:10 left in the opening stanza.

In the second half, Heller scored off a pass from Dennis Maldonado with 29:19 remaining, but Baptist Bible scored just 2:02 later on a goal from Nate Miller to tie the score at 3-3. King's defender Eric Schmeider suffered a serious leg injury on the play which halted the contest for a half-hour.

When play resumed, the Monarchs came out strong in honor of their fallen teammate and took a 4-3 lead when Matt McGarry scored off an assist from Maldonado with 20:41 left in the contest. King's would strike again at 13:16 when Maldonado converted a pass from Mike McGarry into a 5-3 lead with 13:16 on the clock. Seth Davey would score the final goal of the game to bring the Defenders to within 5-4 with 10:29 remaining.

Maldonado led King's with a goal and two assists while Mike McGarry added two assists. Monarch goalie Dan Upton made four saves as King's held a 16-10 advantage in shots.

The Monarchs will host local rival University of Scranton Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
