USMMA CLAIMS TOURNEY TITLE WITH
5-1 WIN OVER KING'S, WESLEY FINISHES THIRD
WILKES-BARRE -- The United State Merchant Marine
Academy at King's Point broken up a close game with an early four-goal
second half explosion as the Mariners defeated host King's College in
the championship game of the first Monarch Kickoff Classic.
King's Point, ranked 17th nationally on Division
III, took a 1-0 half-time lead when Everett Lindholm converted a penalty
kick at 27:55 when Monarch goalie Dan Upton was called for a foul while
diving for a crossing pass and making contact with the Mariner forward.
In the second half, the Monarchs again shot
themselves in the foot when Glen Peer's cross was redirected into the
King's net by a Monarch defender just 1:34 in the half. King's Point
then struck quickly when Nick Dandapani stole a Monarch pass from 40
yards out and scored on a breakaway just 0:19 later to push the Mariner
advantage to 3-0. Kyle Flynn then struck net for King's Point at the
37:00 mark off an assist from Lindholm.
The Mariners would score their final goal with
33:18 remaining when Peer converted a Dandapani pass to push the score
to 5-0. King's scored its only goal with 32:27 left when Jordan Miller
redirected a cross from Mike McGarry to get the Monarchs on the board.
King's Point (2-0) outshot King's 12-5 while the
Monarchs (1-1) held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
King's goalie Dan Upton made seven saves while
Mariner goalies Jarred Schwandt combined for one save.
The Monarchs will return to action Wednesday when
King's hosts Lebanon Valley at 4:00 p.m.
WESLEY DOWNS KEYSTONE 7-1 IN
CONSOLATION GAME
In the consolation game, Wesley College posted a
7-1 victory over Keystone College to finish third in the Monarch Kickoff
Classic at King's College, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Trevor Zimmer led the Wolverines (1-1) with two
goals and one assist, while Daniel Castillo also scored a pair of goals.
Joey Spino chipped in with one goal and one assist while Derek
Roberts-Dukes and Evan Myers scored one goal each. Mike McCans added an
assist for Wesley, which held a 7-0 lead before Keystone's Julian Trolla
scored unassisted with 17:14 remaining.
Anthony Cook made three saves n goal for Wesley,
while Reinaldo Arce had five stops for Keystone (0-2) in the first half
before James King took over in the second stanza to post four saves.
