KING’S, USMMA TO MEET FOR TOURNEY TITLE

WILKES-BARRE - King’s College and the United State Merchant Marine Academy at King’s Point both posted shutout victories to advance to the finals of the first-ever King’s Soccer Classic Saturday at Betzler Fields in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

In the first game of the tournament, King’s posted a 5-0 triumph over Keystone, before the USMMA earned a 3-0 victory over Wesley College.

King’s raced to a 4-0 first-half lead thanks to a pair of goals by Greg Castellani. The Monarchs junior gave King’s a 1-0 lead off an assist from Brandon Stanchock at 34:47. The Monarchs then scored twice within a 26-second span to take a 3-0 lead. Brett Shipe struck net off a Castellani assist at 19:40 before Castellani added his second goal at 19:14 off a Shipe assist. Mike Soldo then scored unassisted with 2:56 left in the half.

In the second stanza, Jordan Miller netted the final Monarch goal on a penalty kick with 23:26 to give King’s its final margin of victory. Dan Upton made two saves while Trevor Riccobon added four stops to combine for the shutout in goal. Keystone goalie Reinaldo Arce made six saves.

Both King’s and Keystone registered 15 shots on goal and three corner kicks apiece.

The USMMA, ranked 17th nationally in the Division III pre-season national standings, took a 1-0 lead at 25:46 of the first half when Everet Lindholm scored off an assist from Marcial Alzugaray. The Mariners then took a 2-0 halftime lead when Tim Shea scored off a Kyle Flynn assist. Joe Meagher scored the Mariners’ final goal with 8:14 remaining in the contest on Flynn’s second assist of the game.

USMMA outshot Wesley 7-3, but trailed 3-2 in corner kicks.

Keystone and Wesley will meet Sunday in the 11:00 a.m. consolation game while King’s and the USMMA will play for the tournament title at 1:00 p.m.
