WILLIAM PATERSON HANDS 5-1 SETBACK TO KING'S

WILKES-BARRE --  Visiting William Paterson University broke a scoreless tie with two sets of quick-strike, back-to-back of goals as the Pioneers defeated King's College 5-1 in a non-conference men's soccer matchup Wednesday at Betzler Fields in Wilkes-Barre.

King's dominated the first 15:00 territorially before Paterson's Daniel Walker corralled a loose ball off a corner kick in front of the King's to push across the game's first goal at the 27:39 mark.  But at 27:17, Paterson struck again as Carlos Ortiz scored off a Eric Kinkle assist to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.

The Pioneers extended the lead to 3-0 when Dave Lloyd converted a pass from Dan Walker with 12:26 left in the half.   Just two minutes later Jason Irizarry took a Brian Solheim pass just 2:00 later and converted the Pioneers fourth goal of the half.

In the second stanza, Brian Noler took a pass from Matt McGarry and drilled a 30-yard rocket into the upper right hand corner of the net to cut the lead to 4-1 with 43:21 remaining. But Paterson would ice the game when Carlos Ortiz delivered a perfect touch pass between a pair of defenders to Jario Valentine who scored the game's final tally with 34:06 left.

Paterson outshot King's by a slim 16-to-14 margin and held a 6-to-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Chris Auriano made four saves on the day for Paterson, which improved to 5-0 on the year. Trevor Riccobon started in goal for King's and allowed four goals while making one save. Mark Ferentz played the second half for the Monarchs and made two stops.

King's return to action Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. contest at Elmira College
