CASTELLANI OT GOAL LIFTS KING'S SOCCER TO SEASON-OPENING WIN OVER
JUNIATA
WILKES-BARRE -- Wyoming Valley West product Greg Castellani made his
homecoming a thrilling one as the sophomore forward scored with just
0:09 remaining in the first overtime period to lift the host King's
men's soccer squad to a 1-0 victory over Juniata College Sunday at
Betzler Fields.
Castellani, who transferred to King's after spending his freshman year
at Catholic University, took a pass from Drew Flavell and split between
two Juniata defenders before putting the ball past Eagle goalie Chris
Zimmerman for the victory.
The season-opening contest for both teams provided several scoring
chances for both teams but neither was able to convert. Brandon
Heller also hit the crossbar with 7:23 remaining as the Monarchs missed
out on a key scoring chance.
King's freshman goalie Dan Upton was outstanding in his collegiate
debut, making several leaping saves to keep the Monarchs alive. Upton
totaled 14 stops on the day. Juniata held a 19-13 advantage in
shots and a 6-4 edge on corner kicks. Zimmerman made five saves for the
Eagles.
