KING'S LAX RALLY FALLS SHORT AS SCRANTON SCORES GAME WINNER WITH 0:18 LEFT

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College men's lacrosse team overcame a 8-4 deficit late in the third quarter, only to fall when Dan Stallone netted the game winner with just 0:18 left as the University of Scranton held on for an exciting 11-10 victory Wednesday at Betzler Fields.

With the win, Scranton improved to 3-9 overall and 3-5 in the Middle Atlantic Conference. King's, meanwhile, slipped to 3-8 and 2-6 in conference play.

Kings' took a 3-1 first quarter lead on goals by John Matusiewicz, Chris Hovis, and Andrew D'agostino. The Royals, however, outscored the Monarchs 3-1 in the second period as goals by Edward Boate, Brendan Clifford, and Todd Cuccia would deadlock the teams at 4-4 at the halftime break.

The Royals started out quickly in the third quarter with four unanswered goals. Boate and Sean Daly tallied two quick goals at 13:02 and 12:47 respectively to give Scranton a 6-4 lead. Boate and Cuccia then struck again with two more goals in a 0:19 span as Scranton's lead grew to 8-4 with 4:26 left in the period. King's would close to within 8-5 when T.J. Lyon would find the net with 2:04 left in the third quarter.

Scranton would score again with just 1:50 gone in the fourth period on a goal by Brendan Clifford as the Royal lead grew to 9-5. The Monarchs, however, would fight back with three goals in a 0:40 span as Lyon scored two goals and Paul Moran added another to cut the Scranton lead to 9-8.

With the game winding down, King's tied the score with 3:05 left when Ryan Lachner scored off an assist from Gary Morgan to knot the score at 9-9. Scranton, though, recaptured the lead on Cuccia's third goal with 1:59 on the clock as the Royals went back on top 10-9. The Monarchs would not fold and Lyon tied the score at 10-10 on his fourth goal of the game with 1:23 left.

After both teams traded turnovers, Scranton would capitalize on its final possession when Stallone fired the dramatic game-winning shot with just 0:18 left to give the Royals the victory.

Boate led Scranton with three goals and an assist while Boate also scored three goals. Clifford would chip in with two. Lyon scored five for the Monarchs while Matusiewicz netted two. Lachner added a goal and two assists while Gary Morgan had three assists.

King's held a 34-27 advantage in shots and a 29-20 edge in ground balls.

Andrew Bartle made 1 saves in goal for the Monarchs while Royal keeper Thomas Davis made nine stops and Tony Angelone added one save.

King's will be idle until Wednesday when the Monarchs host Lycoming College at 4:00 p.m. at Betzler Fields.
