BIG THIRD PERIOD PROPELS WIDENER LAXERS OVER KING'S, 13-8
WILKES-BARRE -- Visiting Widener University broke open a 4-4 game at
the half with a seven-goal third period to post a hard-fought 13-8
victory over a game King's College squad in a Middle Atlantic Conference men's
lacrosse matchup Saturday at Betzler Fields.
Widener, which has lost to four top-25 nationally-ranked teams, improved to 9-4 overall and 9-1 in the MAC. King's
slipped to 5-10 and 2-8 in conference play.
After King's forged a 4-4 tie at the half against their favored
opponent, the Pioneers came flying out of the gates in the second half and quickly
took a 5-4 lead when Denis Mann scored off a Brian Stromko assist just
2:55 into the third period. Widener would add to the lead just 0:40 later when
Alan Krawitz scored unassisted with 11:25 left in the period. Stromko
would then score at 10:15, followed by another goal by Mann at 9:50 to
push the lead to 8-4.
Widener would add two more goals to build a 10-4 advantage before King's
would get on the scoreboard, Chris Landry struck net off a pass from
Ryan Thomas at 5:16, then added an unassisted goal at 3:12 to bring the
score to 11-6 heading into the final period.
Gary Morgan and John Matusiewicz would score the final two goals for
King's.
Landry finished the4 game with three goals and assist while Matusiewicz
netted a pair of goals. Thomas and Morgan finished with one goal and one
assist each while Joe Baldasare chipped in with a goal for the Monarchs.
Steve Matusiewicz made 13 saves in goal for King's.
Mann led Widener with four goals while Todd Fairle chipped in with three
goals and one assist.
