KING'S MEN'S LACROSSE TEAM RALLIES TO DEFEAT SCRANTON 10-9, SETS PROGRAM RECORD FOR WINS IN ONE SEASON

SCRANTON, Pa.—The King's College men's lacrosse squad rallied to post a 10-9 decision over the host University of Scranton in Middle Atlantic Conference action Wednesday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.

With the win, King's set a program record for victories in one season as the Monarchs improved to 5-9 overall and 2-7 in the MAC.

Trailing 8-5 in the third period, Monarch junior midfielder John Matusiewicz scored three of his five goals in the final nine minutes of play. Junior attacker Ryan Thomas added three goals and two assists and senior goalie Steve Matusiewicz made a game-high 16 saves, including four in the final two minutes of play to seal the victory for the Monarchs.

King's led 5-4 at the half but Scranton would tally four straight goals to take an 8-5 lead, capped by a Dan Stallone unassisted goal at the 4:49 mark of the third. King’s responded with unassisted goals by sophomore defenseman Brendan Ireton and sophomore attacker Gary Morgan to make it 8-7 entering the fourth period.

John Matusiewicz took over by scoring three straight goals—at the 9:15, 5:49 and 4:45 marks—as King’s regained the lead for good, 10-8, before Stallone made it a one-goal game with an unassisted goal at the 2:44 mark.

The Royals had an extra-man opportunity in the final minute, but Steve Matusiewicz made two key saves on close shots to end Scranton’s bid to send the game into overtime.

Sophomore midfielder Dan Stallone led Scranton with five goals. Sophomore attacker Sean O’Connor and junior attacker Todd Cuccia scored a goal and had three assists apiece. Freshman midfielder Matt Huber and freshman attacker Kevin Joyce contributed a goal each for Scranton, now 1-13 overall and 1-9 in the MAC.

Senior goalie Tom Kenyon was credited with 13 saves for Scranton, which will close out its 2005 season this Saturday, April 30, against Centenary College at Fitzpatrick Field beginning at 3:00 p.m.
