KING'S LAXERS POST FIRST-EVER WIN OVER SCRANTON

WILKES-BARRE -- John McGuire scored eight goals to power the King's College men's lacrosse team to a 14-7 victory over the University of Scranton Wednesday at Betzler Fields. It also marked the first time ever King's has defeated Scranton since the Monarchs began varsity lacrosse in 1999.

With the win, King's improved to 2-12 overall and 2-7 in the Middle Atlantic Conference. Scranton slipped to 3-11 and 3-7 in conference games.

The Monarchs jumped out of the gates early when McGuire scored off a John Matusiewicz assist just 1:20 into the contest. Matusiewicz would score unassisted before McGuire converted an assist from Ryan Thomas to give King's a 3-0 lead at 11:20 of the first quarter.

The Monarchs continued to control the tempo as scores by Frank Sanchelli and Thomas increased the margin to 5-0 heading into the second quarter. King's McGuire and Thomas would both score again to give the Monarchs a 7-0 lead with 5:30 left in the half. Scranton finally struck net when Rob Loderstedt scored unassisted, followed by Dennis Mahon goal off an assist from Jonathan Sutter with 1:34 remaining in the period as King's took a 7-2 lead into the halftime break.

After Chris Reilly scored at 11:10 of the third quarter, Todd Cuccia scored back-to-back tallies while Jeffery Lange's goal at 8:18 brought the Royals to within 8-5. King's, however, would respond with four straight goals to build a 12-5 lead with 11:04 left in the contest.

Thomas, Matusiewicz, and Reilly netted three goals apiece to aid the Monarch attack. Junior goalie Steve Matusiewicz made 14 saves to earn the victory.

Scranton was led by Loderstedt with two goals and two assists while Cuccia added a pair of goals.

King's will close out its season Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against defending MAC champion Widener University in Chester.
