KING’S FOOTBALL AT FALLS 13-9 AT LEBANON VALLEY

ANNVILLE – Reserve quarterback Patrick Weiss found Adam Brossman for a 31-yard touchdown pass with 7:25 remaining as host Lebanon Valley College posted a 13-9 victory over King’s College in a Middle Atlantic Conference matchup Saturday at Arnold Field, Annville.

With the loss, King’s fell to 0-7 overall and 0-4 in the MAC while Lebanon Valley improved to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the MAC. It marked King’s first 0-7 start since the 1995 team began the season with a 0-9 mark.

With King’s holding a 9-6 lead, Weiss, who was inserted into the game to replace starter Caleb Fick who had been removed from the game after throwing an interception two possessions earlier, would engineer the game winning drive from the Lebanon Valley 30.

Charlie Parker carried for four yards before Ryan Brennan added four more to give the Dutchmen a third-and-two play from the 38.  A 10-yard pass to Parker would provide a Dutchmen first down at the Lebanon Valley 48. After Weiss found Brossman for 18 yards to the Monarch 31, the duo hooked up again on the next play down the left sideline for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown. Dan DiBona added the point-after as the Dutchmen took a 13-9 lead.

King’s would attempt to recapture the lead when the Monarchs drove to the Dutchmen 35-yard line. The drive would stall and on a fourth-and-six play with 4:36 left in the contest, freshman quarterback Blaine Fox, who was making his first collegiate start, was flushed from the pocket and tackled four yards short of the first down, giving the ball over to Lebanon Valley on downs.

The Dutchmen would advance the ball to the King’s 38 but were forced to punt as the Monarchs took over at their own 16. Fox hit Rick Ritter for 24 yards to the King’s 40, but on the next play was picked off by Bill Dixon at the Dutchmen 37 with 1:16 remaining to seal the Lebanon Valley victory.

The Monarchs had two scoring opportunities to score early in the game but missed out on both chances. On the first possession of the game King’s Miles Hansen returned the opening kick off 32 yards to the Lebanon Valley 49. Fox hit Bob Cirko for 25 yards to the 24. The drive would falter and King’s came up empty when a fourth-down pass to Cirko fell incomplete.

Lebanon Valley would take over on its own 40-yard line and marched to the King’s nine. The Monarch defense would hold and Andrew Brandt’s 26-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Craig Geibert. The Monarchs, however, were flagged for a roughing the kicker penalty, giving the Flying Dutchmen a first-and-goal from the King’s four. King’s coaching staff, however, vehemently argued the blocked kick should nullify the contact, but game officials disagreed and the Flying Dutchmen were awarded a first-and-goal at the four-yard line. Two plays later Parker would score from two yards out to put Lebanon Valley on top. Mike Lovett blocked the extra point as the Dutchmen took a 6-0 lead with 2:40 left in the first quarter.

King’s would fail to convert another scoring chance midway through the second quarter when the Monarchs took over at its own 40 following a Dutchmen punt.  A 13-yard pass to Bob Lane and a 14-yard run by Brandon Murray gave King’s a first down at the Lebanon Valley to the 23.  Fox then picked up 11 yards on a bootleg to the Dutchmen nine.  Two plays later, though, Fox and center Ryan Arcangeli failed to connect on the snap and Lebanon Valley recovered the fumble at the Lebanon Valley eight-yard line to end the threat.

Late in the second quarter, King’s defense forced a Lebanon Valley punt from deep in its own territory and the Monarchs came up with a big special teams play when Tore Alaimo blocked the kick and recovered in the end zone to get the Monarchs on the board with 0:40 on the clock.  King’s, however, was unable to take the lead when Tim Lust’s extra-point kick sailed wide left as the score remained 6-6 at the halftime break.

King’s would take the lead when after Mike Lovett stripped parker of the ball and recovered at the Dutchmen 49.The Monarchs would drive to the eight-yard line but were unable to put the ball into the end zone  King’s would settle for a 25-yard field goal by Andrew DeRito to take a 9-6 lead with 7:59 remaining in the third quarter.

Lebanon Valley would out gain King’s 306-to-251 in total yards and held a 13-9 advantage in first downs. Parker finished the game with 151 rushing yards on 37 carries while Brossman had three catches for 58 yards, including the game-winning score. Weiss completed 4-of-6 passes for 2 yards while Fick was 5-of-12 for 51 yards and an interception.

For King’s, Murray, who was making his first appearance of the season at tailback, led King’s with 82 yards on 21 carries.  Fox completed 9-of-21 passes for 100 yards and rushed for 53 yards on 13 carries. Ritter had five receptions for 45 yards.

King’s will return to action on Saturday when the Monarchs host Wilkes University in the annual Mayor’s Cup game slated for 1:30 p.m. at Betzler Fields. The contest will stand as King’s 2007 Homecoming Game.
