The Tradition of "The Coal Football"

football_coal_A.jpg (28186 bytes)

The tradition of "The Coal Football" began with the 1993 season.   Presented to the team by the King's Football Club, the 100-pound sculpture is carved into the shape of a football from a solid piece of anthracite coal, an ore indigenous to Northeastern Pennsylvania.

In paying tribute to the hard-working people of the region, King's players touch the coal football for good luck prior to taking the field before each home game.  The coal football also represents the tremendous work ethic of King's players and the coaching staff.

The inscribed plate at its base reads:  "This Coal Football Symbolizes The Energy Needed To Fuel The Fire Of Your Soul.  INTENSITY - COURAGE - DESIRE. Touch The Rock and Fuel The Fire In The Hole."

coal.jpg (25286 bytes)Before each home game, The Coal Football is wheeled out on its pedestal just outside the Monarchs' locker room where the players engage in their good luck routine one-by-one.

The Coal Football was carved by Frank Magdalinski, a noted area coal sculptor and 1966 King's graduate.  Magdalinski also sculpts the "Melberger Award", the beautiful 55-pound coal replica of an old style football helmet which is presented to the Division III national "Player of the Year".

All-Conference Awards

MAC All-Star Selections (team):
Note:   From 1993 through 2000, separate all-conference teams were named for MAC Freedom and Commonwealth Conferences.  During this time, King's players were named All-Freedom Conference, which included five teams.   In 2001, MAC Freedom and Commonwealth teams in football were realigned to one conference.  Thus, from 2001 to present, MAC all-conference teams include all 11 teams.
