KEAN BLANKS KING'S 37-0 IN ECAC SOUTHEAST BOWL
UNION, NJ -- Durrell Dukes netted 257 all-purpose
yards and host Kean College amassed 505 yards of total offense as the
Cougars posted a 37-0 victory in the ECAC Southeast Bowl Saturday in
Union, NJ.
With the win, King's ended its season with a 6-5 mark while Kean
concluded its campaign at 7-4.
Kean took a 7-0 lead with 11:59 left in the first quarter when a
three-yard run by Anthony Stewart capped a six-play, 69-yard drive on
the opening possession of the game. The Cougars would then string
together a nine-play, 80-yard scoring drive which concluded on a 44-yard
pass from Durell Dukes to A.J. Roque as Kean led 14-0 with 11:38
remaining in the second quarter.
The Cougars then added a one-yard scoring run by Roque on six-play,
40-yard drive to up the Kean lead to 21-0 with 6:50 left in the half.
Kean would take a 24-0 lead into the halftime break when Kevin Trump
booted a 32-yard field goal with no time on the clock.
After a scoreless third quarter, Kean pushed the lead to 31-0 when Roque
found Agim Bajramovic with a 12-yard scoring with 12:42 left in the
contest. The Cougars would close out the scoring when Roque hooked up
with Dukes on a 70-yard scoring play with 6:08 remaining.
The Monarchs face a difficult task in slowing down the Cougar offense as
King's played the contest with out injured MAC all-stars Craig Haywood
at safety and George Montras at defensive end. Kean ran 56 plays and
averaged 9.9 yards each play while posting 19 first-downs compared to
just eight for the Monarchs.
The Cougars balanced attack produced 280 rushing yards and 250 passing
yards. Roque completed 8-of-14 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns
Dukes added 84 yards on just six carries while Jared Chunn and Anthony
Stewart chipped in with 53 and 51 rushing yards respectively.
King's, meanwhile, managed just 163 yards of total offense, including 75
rushing yards on the day. John Ortiz rushed for 40 yards on 13 carries
to pace the Monarch attack. King's starting quarterback Jeff Searfass
completed 3-of-7 passes for 25 yards and an interception while back-up
Nick Strom was 5-of-7 for 63 yards and one interception.
Senior safety Matt McGovern led the King's defense with eight tackles
and an interception while recovering two fumbles. Matt Little and Tom
Tulaney added seven tackles apiece.
