BOX SCORE

JACKSON, KING'S DEFENSE DOWNS MORAVIAN, 33-0

WILKES-BARRE – Sophomore tailback Richard Jackson rushed for 115 yards and a pair of touchdowns and the King’s College defense forced seven turnovers as the Monarchs posted a 33-0 victory over Moravian College in a Middle Atlantic Conference matchup Saturday at Betzler Fields.

King’s would push across its first score on the second possession of the game. Following a short Moravian punt, the Monarchs marched 44 yards, keyed by runs of 14 and 15 yards by quarterback David Hessler. Jackson then concluded the drive with an eight-yard run and Bobby Nawrocki’s conversion gave King’s a 7-0 lead at 10:10 of the first quarter.

Following another Moravian punt, King’s took over at its own 44-yard line and mounted another drive. Hessler scrambled for 19 yards, followed by an eight yard run by Jackson. Two players later, Jackson burst through the middle of a gaping hole and ran untouched 29 yards for a touchdown. Nawrocki’s conversion pushed the score to 14-0 with 7:12 remaining in the opening stanza.

Moravian would attempt to counter and moved the ball to the King’s 47 on a 23-yard pass from Charlie Bowden to Jeff Lowry and a nine-yard completion to Jared Rhinehart. But on the next play, tailback Dave Darmofal attempted to fight for extra yardage on a short gain and had the ball taken from his hands by King’s defensive tackle Rubin Doster. The Monarch senior raced 55 yards to the end zone to increase the King’s advantage to 21-0 following Nawrocki’s conversion with 4:46 left in the first quarter.

King’s would take advantage of another Moravian mistake when Josh Fick fumbled an attempted punt return and King’s Geoff Ashton recovered at the Greyhound 35. Nawrocki would then add a 34-yard field goal to give the Monarchs a 24-0 lead with 7:02 left in the half.

Two possessions later, King’s Sean Frasier intercepted Bowden, giving King’s possession at the Moravian 23. On first down, Hessler found Ryan Gennaro in the end zone for a Monarch score. Nawrocki’s conversion sailed wide, but King’s took a 30-0 advantage with 5:07 remaining in the second quarter.

With 0:51 left in the half, Fick fumbled again on another attempted punt return and Chris Keene recovered for the Monarchs at the Moravian 24. Nawrocki would then score what proved to be the game’s final points when calmly drilled a 28-yard field goal with 0:05 on the clock as the Monarchs took a 33-0 lead into the half-time break.

Jackson led King’s offensively with 115 yards on 25 carries and went over 100 yards for the second consecutive week. Hessler, who was 0-for-10 with three interceptions in an opening game loss to Hartwick a week ago, was 14-for-21 for 153 yards, while rushing for 39 yards. Harry Dickey hauled in six catches for 46 yards while Chris Rispoli made four receptions to pace King’s.

Bowden was 7-of-24 for 103 yards and three interceptions and was sacked four times. The Monarch defense shut down the Moravian running game, holding the Greyhounds to just seven net yards on 25 attempts. King’s defense held Moravian to 120 yards of total offense. With the win, King’s improved to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in MAC action. Moravian fell to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the MAC.
