HARTWICK FOOTBALL UPENDS KINGšS 21-13 IN 2002 SEASON
OPENER
WILKES-BARRE Daniel Pincelli completed 16-of-30 passes
for 206 yards and three touchdowns as the Hartwick College football team
defeated host King's College 21-13 Saturday at Betzler Fields.
Hartwick got out of the gates quickly when Pincelli found Ryan Soule on
the fourth play from scrimmage for an 83-yard touchdown pass. The
point after failed after a bad snap from center and the Hawks held a 6-0
lead with 12:38 remaining in the first quarter.
King's would later counter with a nine-play 84-yard drive keyed by a
3-yard run by Richard Jackson and a 24-yard scramble by quarterback David
Hessler. Jackson would then score on a 15-yard scamper to knot the at 6-6
with 2:04 left in the opening quarter but the Monarchs failed to take the
lead when Bobby Nawrocki's conversion kick sailed wide right.
The game remained tied until the final minute of the second quarter when
Monarch cornerback Kamau Woolard intercepted a Pincelli offering at the
Hartwick 26 and raced into the end zone untouched to put the Monarchs on
top with 0:32 left on the clock. Nawrocki's kick was successful and King's
took a 13-6 lead into the break.
In the third quarter, Hartwick caught a break when Mike Palanza recovered
a fumbled punt by King's Sean Frasier at the Monarch 13-yard line and
a subsequent personal foul call on the Monarchs pushed the ball to the
eight yard line. Two plays later, Pinchelli found Jeremy
Godfrey in the back of the end zone for an eight-yard scoring strike. Matt
Mlinar's conversion would then tie the score at 13-13 with 0:09 left in
the third quarter.
The Hawks would again benefit from another King's special team's mistake
when the Monarchs attempted to punt from their own 10-yard line. The
ensuing snap from center sailed over the head of King's punter Nawrocki
and out of the end zone for a safety, giving Hartwick a 15-13 lead.
Hartwick would then regain possession off a King's punt following the
safety and the Hawks would push across the final score with 4:29 left when
Pincelli found Soule for a 3-yard touchdown to seal the victory.
The Hawks held a 20-9 advantage in first downs and a 242-to-168 advantage
in total yards. King's, which lost its starting quarterback, leading
rusher, and two top receivers from last year, did not complete a pass in
the game, going 0-for-15. Hessler was 0-for-10 with two interceptions
before Andy French entered the game late in the fourth quarter and went
0-for-5 with one interception. Jackson led King's offensively with
135 rushing yards on 29 carries.
Soule had five catches for 118 yards while Clarence Welch led the ground
game with 53 yards on 14 attempts.
Defensively, King's held the Hawks to just 36 net rushing yards and sacked
Pincelli seven times on the day. But the Monarchs hurt themselves with
seven defensive penalties which resulted in Hartwick first downs and kept
Hawk drives alive. Hartwick held a commanding 30:09 to 19:41 time of
possession advantage.
