KING'S MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM FALLS HARD AT DESALES, 82-55

CENTER VALLEY -- On the heels of a big early-season victory over defending Freedom Conference champion University of Scranton on Wednesday, the King's College men's basketball team followed up with one of its worst performances in years as the favored Monarchs fell hard to host DeSales University, 82-55 Saturday in Center Valley.

With the loss, King's fell to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the Freedom Conference. DeSales, meanwhile, improved to 4-2 and 2-0 in league play. DeSales controlled the action throughout and built a 41-29 half-time advantage, leading by as many as 15 points during the opening stanza. Vince Scalzo carried the load for the Monarchs in the first half with 13 of the Monarchs 29 points. DeSales scorched the nets in the opening half, shooting 60.7 (17-28) percent from the field and 55.6 (5-9) from three-point range.

The Monarchs continued to play poorly early into the second half, prompting Monarch coach J.P. Andrejko to pull his regulars from the line-up for unusually long periods of time as the sixth-year Monarch mentor looked to his reserves to provide a spark. Nothing would work for King's however, as DeSales steadily increased the lead as the game progressed. The Monarchs would draw no closer than 14 points during the second half.

It was by far King's worst offensive effort of the season as the Monarchs 55 points was nearly 30 points below its season average of 83.4 points per-game, and 12 below its previous season low of 67 points in a season-opening victory over College of New Jersey.

Scalzo led King's with 13 points but failed to score in the second half. Vince Sobocinski added 11 points while King's leading scorer Jamie Cousart was held to seven points on 3-of-7 shooting but posted a game-high 11 rebounds. Andrejko played 14 players in the game with only Cousart (26 minutes) seeing more than 22 minutes of action. No King's starter saw more than eight minutes of action in the second half.

Eddie Ohlson led DeSales with 12 assists while scoring five points. Darnell Braswell netted 16 points, followed by Phil Stricker with 15 points and eight boards. Ed Lapinski and Steve Kriczky chipped in with 13 points each as the Bulldogs finished the game with a blazing 56.9 (29-51) shooting percentage.

King's will be idle until Thursday when the Monarchs host Baptist Bible College at 7:00 p.m. The game was originally slated for 8:00 p.m.
