KING'S MEN RALLY PAST SCRANTON 75-69 BEHIND 18 POINTS FROM KOFI DWEBENG

WILKES-BARRE -- Junior guard Kofi Dwebeng scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half, including two critical three-pointers as the King's College men's basketball team rallied for a 75-69 victory over defending Freedom Conference champion University of Scranton in the league opener for both teams.

King's improved to 3-2 overall while Scranton fell to 1-2.

With King's trailing 59-56, Dwebeng canned a three-pointer form the right wing to knot he score at 59-59 with 6:25 remaining. Scranton would eventually take a 63-61 lead on a bucket by Randy Arnold with 5:05 on the clock, but Dwebeng answered with another big trey to give the Monarchs a 64-63 lead with 3:57 left.

After the traded misses, Dwebeng converted a short jumper with 2:54 left as King's built a 66-63 lead. After Paul Biagioli scored for Scranton, the Monarchs answered with a jumper from Bob Nenstiel as King's held a 68-65 lead with 2:07 left.  Jamie Cousart then made the first of two foul shots for King's, but after missing the second, Monarch teammate Vince Sobocinski hauled in a big offensive rebound and was fouled on the play.

Sobocinski would connect on both ends of the one-and-one as King's lead grew to 71-65 0:55 on the clock. After a Scranton miss, Sobocinski followed with a lay-up to push the score to 73-65 with 0:22 left. After a Scranton miss, Bob Nenstiel was fouled and made the first of two charity tosses as the Monarchs held a 74-65 advantage with 0:17 left.  Scranton would convert a pair of uncontested lay-ups in the final moments to round out the scoring.

Dwebeng was 7-of-11 from the field and 3-of-5 from three-point range while also distributing five assists.  Cousart added a double-double, totaling 13 points and 10 rebounds, three assists and four steals.  Nenstiel netted 12 points while Sobocinski and Jim Welsh added nine points each.  John Soboleski chipped in with eight points and seven boards.

Scranton was led by 6-8 forward Paul Hawk who was outstanding with a 23-point effort on 9-of-13 shooting and 5-og-8 from three-point range. Arnold tallied 15 points while Ryan Fitzpatrick added 11.

KIng's shot 55.3 (26-47) percent from the field while Scranton made 46.6 (27-58) percent of its shots, including 11-of-25 from three-point range.

King's returns to action Saturday when the Monarchs travel to face DeSales University at 3:00 p.m. in another Freedom Conference pairing.


Schedule Note: King's home game against Baptist Bible College on December 7 has been changed to 7:00 p.m. The game was originally listed as an 8:00 p.m. start.
