SLUGGISH KING'S MEN HOLD OFF DREW, 62-55
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College men's
basketball team overcame its most sluggish effort of the second
semester, but the Monarchs held off a game Drew University squad to post
a 62-55 victory Wednesday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, King's improved to 12-6 overall and 6-1 in Freedom
Conference play. Drew, meanwhile slipped to 7-10 and 2-5.
King's appeared to have control early in the second half when the
Monarchs built a 40-27 lead on a Kofi Dwebeng three-pointer with 17:12
left in the contest. But the Monarchs' shooting would go cold as King's
would score just six points over the next 11:10 as Drew cut the lead to
46-43 on a pair of foul shots from David Cramer with 6:20 left in the
contest. Dwebeng would then hit a short jumper to give the Monarchs a
48-43 advantage with 6:10 on the clock. A traditional three-point play
by Vince Scalzo would extend the King's advantage to 51-43 with 4:42
remaining.
But Drew responded and cut the lead to 56-53 when Ryan Eisner made
one-of-two foul shots with 1:33 on the clock. King's would close out the
game when Vince Sobocinski, Jamie Cousart, and John Soboleski combined
to make six straight foul shots over the final 0:29 of the game.
Soboleski topped King's with 12 points and seven rebounds. Cousart
finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, and four assists while Dwebeng
added 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Scalzo also chipped in
with 11 points while Ryan Nenstiel tallied a season-high nine points.
Eisner led Drew with 10 points while Chris Lopez followed with nine.
King's returns to action Saturday at 3:00 p.m. when the Monarchs visit
Delaware Valley College in Doylestown.
