KING'S DOWNS LYCO WITH SECOND HALF RALLY
WILLIAMSPORT -- Vince Scalzo scored 20 points and
the King's College men's basketball team used a late surge to post an
important 58-52 Freedom Conference road victory over Lycoming College
Wednesday in Williamsport.
With the win, King's improved to 9-6 overall while standing
4-1 in Freedom Conference play. Lycoming,
meanwhile, is 8-8 and 1-4 in league action.
King's appeared to be in command in the first half
when the Monarchs built a 30-18 lead on a three-pointer by Kofi Dwebeng
with 3:50 remaining in the half. The Warriors, however, used an 11-3
surge to close to within 33-29 at the break when Kevin Morris drained a
three-pointer just before the buzzer.
In the second half Lycoming would continue to press the action and
eventually took a 38-35 lead with 1:27 left on a bucket from Greg Sye.
The Warriors would extend the lead to 41-35 when Morris was fouled
attempting a three-pointer and sank all three charity tosses with 10:05
on the clock.
King's was respond, however and tied the game at 46-46 on a pair of foul
shots from Scalzo. After a Lycoming miss, Dwebeng would hit a short
jumper to give King's a 48-46 lead. The Warriors would miss on a
three-pointer and Scalzo would follow with a basket down low to give the
Monarchs a 50-46 advantage with 1:45 remaining.
After Morris hit a pair of foul shots for the Warriors to cut the lead
to 50-48, Vince Sobocinski would make one-of-two foul shots to put the
Monarchs on top 51-48 with 1:18 left.
Morris would then score on a lay-up to bring
Lycoming to within 51-50 with 1:07 on the clock. Jamie Cousart was then
fouled and made both ends of a one-and-one, then followed with a
traditional three-point play to give King's a 56-50 lead with 0:35 left.
King's would then make two-of-four foul shots over the final 0:21 to
seal the win.
Scalzo was 7-of-9 from the field and 5-of-8 from the charity stripe.
Cousart added nine points and six rebounds while Dwebeng added eight
points. Morris led Lycoming with 21 points.
The Monarchs will next travel to Madison, NJ to face upstart FDU-Florham
at 3:00 p.m. The Devils, who were picked to finish last in the
Freedom Conference Coaches Pre-Season Poll, have been the surprise
team of the Freedom Conference this season with an outstanding 12-4
overall record and a 4-1 conference mark.
