MONARCH MEN POST IMPORTANT 76-55 CONFERENCE WIN OVER WILKES UNIVERSITY

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College men's basketball team used a balanced attack with four double-figure scorers as the host Monarchs earned a 76-55 win over cross-town rival Wilkes University Wednesday in Scandlon Gym.

With the win, King's improved to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in Freedom Conference play.  Wilkes, meanwhile fell to 9-3 and 1-3 while seeing their six-game winning streak come to an end.

Both teams would struggle offensive in the first half, but King's would build a 19-6 lead when Jim Welsh and Ryan Nenstiel made back-to-back three-pointers, followed by a pair of foul shots from Vince Scalzo with 7:49 remaining the opening stanza. Wilkes would cut the lead to 21-17 with 4:50 on the clock when Matt Gould and Jeremy Kable made consecutive three-pointers.

The Monarchs would counter with a 9-2 surge, capped by a bucket down low from Bob Nenstiel to take a 30-19 lead with 3:18 remaining.  Wilkes closed to within 37-29 on a Gould three-pointer with 0:54 left, but Kofi Dwebeng gave the Monarchs a 39-29 halftime lead with a key buck at the buzzer.

In the second half, Wilkes would cut the deficit ti e49-41 on a three-pointer by Anthony Gabriel, but the Colonels would come no closer as King's steadily extended the lead over the remainder of the contest.

Jim Welsh led a number of contributors with 16 points, going 4-fofr-4 from three-point range. Scalzo followed with 15 points, four rebounds, and three assists.  John Soboleski was outstanding for the Monarchs, tallying 14 points and 13 rebounds with four blocked shots. Jamie Cousart netted 10 points with 11 boards while Bob Nenstiel chipped in with nine points and four boards.

Gould led Wilkes with 17 points while Gabriel added 15. Wilkes leading scorer Tom Kresge was scored just seven points on 2-of-12 shooting but pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

King's outrebounded Wilkes 46-34. The Colonels made just 29.0 (18-62_ percent of their shots from the floor and only 12-of-22 from the foul line.  King's converted 46.3 (25-54) percent from the field and 18-of-21 from the charity stripe.

Kingšs will host Delaware Valley Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gym.
