YORK HOLDS OFF KING'S, 91-87
YORK -- Chad McGowan scored 27 points to pace six
double-figure scorers as host York College defeated King's College 91-87
in a non-conference men's basketball game Wednesday in the Grumbacher
Center.
With the win, York improved to 7-4 while King's slipped to 6-6. It
marked the first meeting between the teams since York posted a 70-58 win
over the Monarchs in the 2005 NCAA Division III National Tournament
"Elite Eight".
The Spartans took a narrow 49-44 lead into the halftime break and
maintained a slim advantage throughout the first portion of the second
half. King's would trail 70-66 on a lay-up by Vince Scalzo with 8:14
left, but York went on a 7-0 run, capped by a pair of foul shots by Brad
Zerfing with 6:16 remaining to forge a 77-66 lead.
Jamie Cousart would score five straight points for
the Monarchs to cut the lead to 77-71 with 5:40 left, before a basket in
the pain by John Soboleski brought the Monarchs to within 77-73 with
5:02 on the clock.
York would counter with a 6-2 spurt to extend the lead to 83-75 on a
dunk by Pat Kelley with 3:38 left, but King's answered with a 5-0 surge
to cut the lead to 83-78 on a three-pointer by Vince Sobocinski with
2:15 left.
The Spartans would then respond by scoring four
straight points to take a 87-78 lead a pair of foul shot by Joe Yeck
with 0:52 remaining. Scalzo would convert a traditional three-point
play, then added a basket down low with 0:22 left to cut the lead to
88-83 with 0:22. York would ice the game when the Spartans made three of
four foul shots to build a 91-85 lead with 0:10 left.
Cousart would make a pair of foul shots for King's with 0:02 left to
score the final points of the contest.
McGowan was 9-of-16 from the field and made 9-of-10 from the foul line
as York converted 24-of-35 free throws in the game. Yeck and Nate
Lankford netted 13 and 12 points respectively while Zerfing and Nick
Brady added 11 each. Nate Fry chipped in with 10 points.
Sobocinski led King's with 19 points while Scalzo and Cousart followed
with 18 and 17 points. Bon Nenstiel chipped in with 10 points.
King's, which made 17-of-22 from the foul line, was out rebounded by
York 39-29. The Monarchs shot well from the field, making 52.6 (30-57)
percent from field goal range compared to 48.3 (29-60) percent for the
Spartans.
King's will next host Kean University Saturday at 7:0 p.m. in Scandlon
Gym.
