KING'S MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO WILKES 77-76 IN OVERTIME

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's men's basketball team was unable to make a nine-point lead with 2:37 remaining stand up as the Monarchs dropped a 77-76 heartbreaker to cross-town rival Wilkes University in the MAC Freedom Conference opener Wednesday in the Marts Center.

With the loss, King's fell to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play while Wilkes improved to 3-1 and 1-0.

With King's clinging to a 66-60 lead following a pair of foul shots from Vince Sobocinski, Wilkes  answered when sophomore Chris Shovlin hit a three-pointer to 0:35 left to bring the score to within 66-63.

After King's committed a costly turnover with 0:24 left, Shovlin buried another long three-pointer with 0:17 left to knot the score at 66-66. King's had a chance to win the game but Jared Black's shot at the buzzer bounced off the front of the rim.

With the game tied at 73-73 in overtime after a pair of foul shots by Vince Scalzo, Wilkes took a 76-73 lead when Mike Constantine hit a three-pointer with 0:40 left. After a King's missed trey with 0:08 left, Shovlin was fouled and made the second of two charity tosses to put the Colonels on top 77-73. Black would make a three-pointer for King's with 0:01 left to close out the scoring.

Scalzo led King's with 20 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out in overtime. Kofi Dwebeng came off the bench to net 12 points with eight rebounds while Sobocinski added 11 points in a reserve role.

Evan Walters led Wilkes with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and seven blocks while Shovlin followed with 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting.

King's travels to Doylestown to face Delaware Valley College Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
