KING'S MEN DOWN SUSQUEHANNA TO CLAIM TOURNEY CROWN
SELINSGROVE -- Marty O'Hora scored 12 points and
added 11 rebounds to earn most valuable player honors as the King's
College men's basketball team defeated host Susquehanna University 61-49
in the championship game of the Pepsi-Weis Markets Tip-Off Tournament in
Selinsgrove.
The Monarchs raced out to a commanding 38-26
half-time lead on the strength of eight points from senior Brian Horgan
and freshman Vince Scalzo while fellow rookie Jim Welsh netted all seven
of his points in the game's first 20 minutes of play.
King's would maintain the lead throughout the second
half until Susquehanna would close to within 46-43 with 9:08 remaining on
a bucket by Rob Dombroski. The Monarchs would respond with a 9-0 run
thanks to four points from O'Hora and a three-point bucket and two
subsequent foul shots from Horgan to build a 55-43 lead with 4:48
remaining. The Monarchs would retain a double-digit lead over the final
minutes of the game.
King's placed four players in double-figures as
Horgan netted 10 points and nine rebounds. Scalzo finished with 11 points
and four boards. Freshman guard Jamie Cousart added 11 points, seven
rebounds, and four assists. Landon Gabriel chipped in with eight points
and four assists.
Susquehanna was led by 6-9 center Walter Fowler with
15 points and 11 rebounds while Chad Lauer added eight points and 10
rebounds.
Horgan and Cousart joined O'Hara on the
all-tournament team, along with Fowler, Staten Island's Mike Stewart, and
Micah Owens of Elmira.
King's will return to action Tuesday when the
Monarchs travel to face College Misericordia at 7:00 p.m. in Dallas.
