KING'S MEN END FIVE-GAME LOSING STREAK TO
DESALES
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College men's
basketball team moved into sole possession of first-place in the Freedom
Conference as the Monarchs posted an important 85-62 victory over host
DeSales University Saturday in Center Valley.
With the win, King's improved to 17-4 overall and 8-2 in conference play
while ending a five-game losing streak at the hands of DeSales. The
Bulldogs fell to 15-6 and 7-3 and are tied with Scranton, one game behind
King's in the Freedom Conference standings.
The victory was impressive for the Monarchs as leading scorer Brian Horgan
(21.0 ppg) was held to six points on 2-of-7 shooting, his lowest point
total of the year.
With Horgan held in check, senior point-guard Landon Gabriel stepped to
the forefront and netted a career-high 15 points on 5-of-5 shooting from
three-point range. Junior forward Thomas Moore followed with 13 points on
5-of-7 shooting. Senior center Marty O'Hora netted 12 points with
seven rebounds and seven assists while scoring the 1,000th point of his
collegiate career.
Freshman center John Soboleski came up big by scoring each of his 12
points in the first half as the Monarchs took a 44-37 lead into the
break. In the second half, King's would outscore DeSales 41-25 on
the strength of 11 points from Moore.
King's shot 52.6 (30-57) percent from the field, including 11-of-22 from
three-point range, and made 14-of-16 shots from the foul line. The
Monarchs also owned a 36-24 rebounding advantage.
DeSales was led by Mike Venafra with 17 points while Kyle Koch netted 10.
No other Bulldog player reached double-figures.
King's will be idle until Wednesday when the Monarchs host Lycoming at
8:00 p.m. in another big conference pairing.
