MONARCH MEN DROP FIRST CONFERENCE GAME WITH 83-60 LOSS TO
DESALES
WILKES-BARRE – The King’s College men’s
basketball team suffered its first conference loss of the year as the
Monarchs dropped a 83-60 verdict to visiting DeSales University Saturday
in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, DeSales improved to 11-3
overall and 3-1 in conference play with its fifth straight victory over
the Monarchs. King's, which was the final team in the Freedom
Conference to not lose in league play, slipped to 12-3 and 3-1 in the
conference.
DeSales took over the game right from the start with outstanding
shooting. The Bulldogs raced out to a 33-14 lead with 6:50 remaining
as Kyle Koch scored 11 of his team's first 13 points. The
Bulldogs forged a 40-27 halftime lead on the strength of 17 points from
Koch. DeSales shot 50.0 (17-34) percent from the field and made 4-of-8
three-pointers.
DeSales continued to control the game throughout the second half and never
allowed the Monarchs to close within 13 points.
Koch led all scorers with 29 points and eight rebounds. Mike Venafra
added 16 points while Drew Christman followed with nine points and eight
boards.
Marty O'Hora topped the Monarchs with a solid 17-point effort while Vince
Scalzo added 10 points. King's leading scorer Brian Horgan was limited to
eight points with six rebounds while Landon Gabriel netted seven.
Thomas Moore and Jim Welsh chipped in with six points each.
King's will next host Scranton Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gym.
