MONARCH MEN FALL TO SCRANTON IN OVERTIME

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College men's' basketball team was outscored 15-9 in overtime as the Monarchs fell to rival University of Scranton 77-71 in an MAC Freedom Conference matchup Saturday in Scranton.

With the loss, King's falls to 13-8 overall and 6-4 in conference play. Scranton improves to 17-4 and 8-2.

The Monarchs held a 62-58 lead with 3:02 left following a basket by Britt Moore. The Royals would then close to within 62-61 on a three-pointer by Jeff Kane with 2:40 remaining. With 1:10 remaining, Scranton's Derek Elphick was fouled and made the second of two charity tosses to knot the score at 62-62. Neither team would score and the game entered overtime.

Dave Marcks put the Monarchs ahead 64-62 by hitting two foul shots, but Scranton took the lead when Kane hit a three-pointer with 3:47 left. With 1:39 remaining, Marty O'Hora gave King's a 71-70 lead with a three-pointer, but Elphick scored and was fouled with just 0:38. The Royal center senior missed the foul shot but teammate Brian O'Donnell snared the carom and was fouled with 0:37 remaining. O'Donnell made one-of-two shots to give the Royals a 73-71 advantage.

After a King's miss, Dan Loftus was fouled on the rebound and went to the line where he sank both foul shots to push the Royal lead to 75-71 with 0:21 left. After King's missed a three-pointer, Bryant Smith rebounded and was fouled with 0:03 left, converting both shots to give Scranton its final margin of victory.

Dannie Evans led King's with 18 points and seven assists, while Kasim Holloman added 15 points. O'Hora netted 13 points with 10 rebounds while Moore added 11 off the bench. Steve Hite snared nine rebounds for King's.

Scranton was paced by Kane with 21 points off the bench while Elphick and O'Donnell added 20 each.

King's will host Delaware Valley Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
