EVANS CAREER-HIGH 33 POINTS POWER KING'S MEN OVER
SCRANTON
WILKES-BARRE - Dannie Evans scored a career-high 33
points and King's College overcame major foul trouble to hold on to a
86-73 victory over the University of Scranton in an MAC Freedom Conference
matchup Saturday at Scandlon Gymnasium.
Evans led King's to a 42-35 half-time advantage by
netting 16 points, including four three-pointers at the break, while Kasim
Holloman added nine for the Monarchs. Scranton scored 12 of its 35 points
from the foul line as King's was called for 12 fouls over the opening 20
minutes.
In the second half, the Monarchs came out of the
locker room on fire and went on a 17-3 run to build a 59-38 lead with
14:17 remaining. Evans led the charge with nine points while Dave Marks
netted six.
The game would suddenly change when Holloman was
called for his third and fourth personal fouls within a seven-second span.
Following his fourth foul, the Monarch senior protested the call to the
game official who promptly slapped Holloman with a technical foul. The
call gave Holloman his fifth foul, forcing King's leading scorer out of
the game for the remainder of the contest.
Scranton would capitalize on the momentum change and
began to chip away at King's lead and closed to within 63-50 with 9:56
left in the game as Ryan Rogan scored six straight points for the Royals.
After an Evans bucket for King's, Scranton went on a 9-2 run thanks to a
three-pointer by Jeff Kane, a bucket by Derek Elphick, and four foul shots
from Kane to bring Scranton to within 65-59 with 7:43 left. King's would
counter on consecutive baskets from Evans and Jonathan to push the
advantage to 69-59 with 6:38 left.
The Royals would close to within 75-68 with 4:57 on
a pair of foul shots by Elphick, but Evans would score again before Marty
O'Hora nailed a big three-pointer to put the Monarchs on top 80-68 with
3:43 left. The Royals cut the lead to 82-73 on a basket by Bryant Smith
with 0:51 left, but with Scranton forced to foul, King's would convert all
six charity tosses to close out the game.
King's was whistled for a whopping 32 fouls on the
day as Scranton converted 29-of-37 foul shots, compared to just 12-of-15
for the Monarchs. King's did not go to foul line until 14:23 of the second
half when Elphick was called for a technical foul.
Evans broke his previous career high of 23 points
set last season. He was joined in double figures by Holloman and Britt
Moore with 11 points each. Marks and O'Hora added eight each for the
Monarchs. Scranton was led by Rogan who scored 23 points. Elphick netted
16 while Brian O'Donnell and Kane added 13 each.,
With the win, King's improved to 10-4 overall and
3-1 in MAC Freedom play. Scranton saw its winning streak end at 10 games
as the Royals fell to 12-3 and 3-1 in conference action.
