MONARCH CAGERS EARN 70-59 WIN OVER WILKES
WILKES-BARRE -- Dennis Hobbs scored 18 points and added 11
rebounds while Kasim Holloman added 17 points to power the King's College
menšs basketball team to a 70-59 victory over host Wilkes University
Wednesday in the Marts Center.
With The win, King's gained its third consecutive regular season win on
Wilkes' home floor while improving to 14-4 overall and 4-3 in MAC Freedom
action. Wilkes slipped to 9-7 and 3-4 in league play. The
victory also enabled King's to take a commanding 8-1 lead in the Times
Leader Mayor's Cup Series matchup with Wilkes.
In the first half, Horgan began the game with a three-pointer to spark
King's to a 12-5 opening game run while Hobbs scored seven points to pace
the Monarchs. A basket by Holloman, another three-pointer by Horgan, and a
bucket by Jamar Stokes enabled King's to extended the margin to 19-9
with 10:47 left in the half.
After a Wilkes basket by Dave Plisko, King's went on a 12-3 run keyed by
five points from Holloman and buckets by Steve Hite and Hobbs as the
Monarch lead grew to 31-14 with 5:20 remaining n the opening stanza.
Wilkes would cut the lead to 35-19 after a basket by John Boylan with 4:26
remaining but King's closed out the half with a 11-8 run. A bucket
by Hobbs and a layup by Holloman pushed the score to 39-21 with 1:22 left.
Hobbs then hit a pair of foul shots before Horgan made 1-of-2 charity
tosses to push the score to 42-24. After a Wilkes three-pointer by
Phil Bonczewski cut the lead to 42-27, Holloman drained two foul shots
with 0:30 left before converting a thunderous break-away dunk at the
half-time buzzer as the Monarchs took a commanding 46-27 lead into the
locker room .
Holloman had 15 first-half points while Hobbs added 1 to lead King's.
Bonczewski paced Wilkes with 13 points.
In the second half, Wilkes would go on a 13-3 run keyed by three-pointers
from Plisko and Mike Morgan t cut the lead to 51-40 with 14:18 remaining.
Kingšs, however, would counter 17- 7 run as Stokes scored six
points to ignite the spurt as the Monarchs pushed its lead to 68-47 with
3:13 remaining. Wilkes would manage just three field goals in the
11:05 span as the Monarchs were able to put the game away.
After Hobbs drained two foul shots to give Kingšs a 70-49 lead with 2:19
remaining and the game decided, Kingšs reserves entered the game.
Wilkes concluded the contest with an 10-0 run over the final minutes
to
make the score respectable.
Horgan was outstanding with 12 points and 13 rebounds while Stokes added
11 points. Wilkes was paced by Bonczewski who had 18 points
while Dave Plisko added 13.
King's returns to action Saturday when the Monarchs host DeSales
University at 4:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
