KING'S MEN FALL TO SCRANTON, 68-62
SCRANTON -- Derek Elphick scored a game-high 20 points and the
University of Scranton outscored visiting King's College 18-10 over the
final seven minutes to post a 68-62 triumph in an MAC Freedom Conference
matchup at the John Long Center.
King's trailed 39-33 with 15:35 remaining after an Elphick basket
but the Monarchs would go on a 14-0 run. Dannie Evans ignited the
burst with a three-pointer to cut the score to 39-36, then Steve Hite made
one-of-two fouls shots, combined with a Brian Horgan jumper to knot the
score at 39-39 with 12:56 remaining. King's then extended their biggest
lead of the game to 47-39 on consecutive three-pointers by Horgan and
Evans with 11:26 left.
From, there, however, King's went cold and Scranton countered as Brian O¹Donnell
converted a three-point play, then added a put-back to bring the Royals to
within 47-46 with 8:25 left. Kasim Holloman drained a three-pointer
to give the Monarchs a 50-46 advantage but Scranton would answer with a
16-2 spurt to build a 62-52 lead with 3:01 left. King's would come within
65-59 after a Jamar Stokes basket with 0:39 left but would draw no closer.
In the first half, King's built a 8-4 lead on two baskets each by
Horgan and Holloman, but Scranton countered to knot the score at 10-10 on
consecutive buckets by Elphick and O¹Donnell. After a King's miss,
Dan Loftus scored on an offensive rebound and Owen Bailey registered dunk
to give Scranton a 14-10 lead. After King's cut the lead to 14-12 on
an Evans bucket, Scranton outscored the Monarchs 16-9 over the final 10:54
to take a 30-23 lead into the half-time break.
Elphick paced Scranton with 12 points in the opening stanza while O¹Donnell
added six. King's leading scorer Hobbs, who played just eight
minutes in the first half after picking up two quick fouls, scored seven
points while Holloman and Horgan added six each.
Overall, Evans led King's with 17 points while Hobbs and Horgan added 14
and 13 each. Holloman chipped in with 11. Hite also had 17
rebounds for the Monarchs. Scranton was paced by Elphick who
had 10 rebounds, while O¹Donnell and Bryant Smith chipped in with 14 and
12 respectively.
With the loss, King's fell to 12-3 overall and 2-2 in MAC Freedom action.
Scranton improved to 6-8 and 3-1.
The Monarchs travel to Williamsport Wednesday to face Lycoming at 8:00
p.m.
