KING'S RALLIES PAST MISERICORDIA 81-79 IN OT
WILKES-BARRE Brian Horgan scored the game-winning basket with
0:03 remaining on overtime to lift the King's College men's basketball
team to a thrilling 81-79 come-from-behind victory over College
Misericordia Thursday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
The comeback win overshadowed a career milestone by Misericordia junior
guard Willie Chandler who scored a game-high 23 points and became the
Cougars all-time leading scorer with 1,569 points, surpassing the previous
mark of 1,557 points by Mike Moeller.
After the teams were deadlocked at 54-54 with 5:56 remaining the Cougars
went on a 12-4 run to build a 66-58 lead with 2:50 remaining. Jason Perry
keyed the outburst with six foul shots and buckets by Chandler,
Shawn Hayes and Kyle Watkins.
King's would counter, however, as Kasim Holloman canned a three-pointer,
Horgan made one of two foul shots, and Holloman added another
three-pointer with 0:09 left to bring the Monarchs to within 69-68.
Chandler then made a pair of foul shots with 0:06 left to put the Cougars
on top 71-68. But in attempting a game-tying three-pointer, King's
Dannie Evans was fouled with 0:02 remaining and buried all three shots to
send the game into overtime.
King's took a 73-71 lead on a bucket by Evans but Chandler and Perry made
consecutive baskets to put the Cougars ahead 75-73 with 3:30 left.
Jonathan Veet drained a three-pointer to put the Monarchs on top 76-75
before Horgan drained another three-pointer with 1:40 left to give King's
a 79-75 lead.
Misericordia answered as on one-of-two foul shots by Hayes and a basket by
Ed Corliss to bring the Cougars within 79-78 with 1:12 left. After a
King's miss, Chandler was fouled and made one-of-two attempts to
knot the score at 79-79 0:34 left.
From there, King's ran the clock down to 0:09 before calling a timeout.
The Monarchs ran a play with Horgan catching the ball at the left
sideline and the King's junior nailed a jumper under heavy pressure to
give the Monarchs the lead. After a timeout, Misericordia attempted
to pass the full length of the court but the ball was intercepted by King's
Dave Marks at the three-point line to preserve the Monarch victory.
King's received outstanding balance with five players scoring in
double-figures. Holloman scored 12 of his team-high 18 points in the second half and
pulled down seven rebounds. Evans added 13 while Horgan and Dennis
Hobbs followed with 10. Steve Hite also had 10 points with a 10
rebounds. Both Hobbs and Hite fouled out in the closing minutes of
regulation. Marks posted eight points with nine rebounds while Veet added
seven points
Chandler set the scoring mark at 18:34 of the second half, on a
three-pointer. He was joined in double-figure scoring by Perry who tallied
16 points with 11 rebounds while Kyle Watkins added 12.
The Monarchs will return to action Monday when King's travels to Glenside
to face Arcadia University at 8:00 p.m.
