MONARCH MEN DEFEATS SUSQUEHANNA IN PEPSI/WEIS TOURNEY FINAL

SELINSGROVE -- Senior power forward Dennis Hobbs scored 23 points and pulled down eight rebounds to earn most valuable player honors as the King’s College men’s basketball team defeated host Susquehanna University 66-64 in the championship of the Pepsi/Weis Market Tip-Off Tournament in Selinsgrove.

The win also gave first-year head coach J.P. Andrejko a championship in his first weekend as a collegiate head coach.

With the score tied 61-61 with 1:37 remaining, King’s (2-0) took a 64-61 lead on a bucket and foul shot by Hobbs with 1:15 left. Susquehanna would tie up the score on a three-pointer by Dan Rathmell with 0:48 remaining, but Hobbs again put the Monarchs ahead 66-64 on a another basket down low.

Susquehanna (1-1) would attempt to take the lead but Chris Zimmerman’s three-point attempt bounced off the rim and was rebounded by Monarch junior Steve Hite who was subsequently fouled.

Hite missed the first of a one-and-one attempt and Susquehanna rebounded and called a time out with 0:02 remaining. But the Crusaders were unable to successful inbound the ball and never got off a final shot as the final whistle sounded.

The teams were deadlocked 30-30 at half-time but King’s opened the final frame with a 18-6 run to take a 48-38 lead with 14:06 remaining.

Susquehanna would then go on a run of its own and knotted the score at 50-50 on a Glen Weinrich basket with 10:12 left. Susquehanna, however, would tie the game on three more occasions but would never take the lead.

Hobbs, who shot 10-of-14 from the field, was joined on the all-tournament team by Kasim Holloman who had 14 points, four steals, and three assists.

Hite was also outstanding with a 14-point, 12-round effort. Dannie Evans chipped in with seven points to aid the Monarchs cause.

Susquehanna was led by Tim Hurd with 18 points while Zimmerman and Rathmell chipped in with 13 points each.

King’s will return to action Tuesday when the Monarchs host Baptist Bible College at 7:30 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
