(Cousart nets 1,000th Point of his Career)CHESTER -- Widener University outscored King's College 6-1 over the final 0:33 of the game to remain unbeaten with a 73-68 victory over visiting King's College Saturday in Chester.
With the victory, Widener improved to 7-0 on the year while King's fell to 3-2.
King's trailed by as many as 14 points and the first half but closed the margin to 39-28 at the break when Jamie Cousart converted a traditional three-point play with 0:02 on the clock.
In the second half, King's would chip away at the lead and eventually took a 61-58 lead on back-to-back buckets by Cousart and Jim Schule. With Widener holding a 67-65 advantage, King's tied the score at 67-67 on a basket by Cousart with 0:48 remaining. The bucket gave Cousart (left) 1,000 points for his career at King's.
After a Widener timeout, the Pioneers recaptured the lead when Charles Jones was fouled with 0:33 left and made both charity tosses to give the home squad a 69-67 advantage. King's would attempt to tie the score but committed a costly turnover with 0:18 on the clock. The Monarchs would foul Jones who promptly missed the first of a one-and-one at the foul line, but Matt Sosna snared the offensive rebound and quickly passed to Jones who was immediately fouled again with 0:12 left. This time Jones made both shots to push the score to 71-67.
King's would miss a three-pointer with 0:09 left and Vince Scalzo was fouled following a Monarch offensive rebound with 0:02 left. Scalzo would make the first shot to cut the gap to 71-68 but intentionally missed the second with hopes of King's securing a quick rebound-shot. The rebound, however, skirted out of bounds and Widener was awarded possession. Jones was quickly fouled with 0:01 left and made both shots to seal the Pride victory.
Cousart led all scorers with 22 points, five rebounds, and three assists while Scalzo followed with 12 points and eight boards. Welsh also added 12 points while Kevin Conroy and John Soboleski chipped in with nine and eight points respectively. The Monarchs shot a solid 53.2 (25-47) percent for the game but hurt themselves by committing 19 turnovers.
Jones led Widener Widener with 21 points while Nyere Miller and Clinton Cole added 17 and 10 points each.
