Del Prete’s Three-Pointer Gives Misericordia A 51-50 Win Over Wilkes

(Wilkes-Barre, PA) Dom Del Prete hit a three-pointer with 1.7 seconds left to propel Misericordia University to a 51-50 win over Wilkes University in day two action at the Wilkes-Barre Challenge hosted by King’s College on Sunday. The loss drops the Colonels to 4-5 overall, while the Cougars improved to 8-3.

Misericordia had the ball with the game tied at 48-48 with less than a minute to play. However, Wilkes’ Anthony Gabriel stepped in front of a Del Prete pass and raced the length of the floor for a score that made it 50-48 with 11 ticks left.

The Cougars inbounded the ball immediately to Marcus Little, who took the ball the length of the floor. He then made a pass back to Del Prete who hit the three-pointer from the right wing to give his team the 51-50 win.

Misericordia jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening three minutes thanks to field goals by Vinny Baumunk and Matt Hornak, and a three-pointer by Ryan Roa.

Wilkes would cut the lead to 9-7 on a Matt Gould three-pointer with 13:59 left in the stanza. But, the Cougars would respond and upped their lead back to seven on a drive by Little that made it 18-11 with 7:07 left in the half.

The Colonels followed with a 9-0 spurt to take their first lead of the afternoon. Matt Gould knocked down a three-pointer and Steve Kline scored inside to trim the gap to 18-16. Tom Kresge would then tie the game at 18-18 with two free throws, and then gave Wilkes the lead with two more charity tosses at the 2:17 mark that made it 20-18. Hornak cashed in a three-pointer with 48 seconds remaining in the stanza to send Misericordia to the locker room with a 21-20 lead.

Wilkes held the lead, albeit a slim one, throughout most of the second half. The Colonels matched their biggest lead of the game when they took a four-point advantage, 44-40, on a steal and lay-up by Gould with 3:06 left.

Baumunk would pull Misericordia to within 44-43 with a three-pointer with 2:59 left. But, Wilkes’ Chris DeRojas answered with a baseline jumper that improved his teams lead to 46-43 at the 2:53 mark. Baumunk would follow with another trifecta that tied the contest at 46-46.

Hornak provided the Cougars with a 48-46 lead when he rebounded a missed shot by Little and scored on the put-back with 1:19 to go. Kresge was then fouled with 0:50 to play and cashed in both charity tosses to set the stage for the final sequence.

Del Prete had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead Misericordia. Baumunk chipped in with 10 points to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.

Kresge, who earned All-Tournament Team honors, paced the Wilkes attack with 13 points and five caroms. Gould, who was also selected to the All-Tournament Team, finished with 12 points, four assists and four steals.
