KING'S EDGES MISERICORDIA IN WILKES-BARRE CHALLENGE
WILKES-BARRE -- Jamie Cousart scored 17
points and the King's College men's basketball team outscored
Misericordia University 8-4 over the final 4:32 of the game to post a
hard-fought 54-50 victory on the opening day of the Wilkes-Barre
Challenge in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, King's improved to 6-5 on the year while Misericordia fell
to 7-4.
King's raced out of the gates early, building a 20-5 lead with 11:32
remaining in the half on the strength of eight points from Kofi Dwebeng
and six more from Vince Scalzo.
But King's shooting would go cold and scored just seven points the rest
of the half. Misericordia chipped away and closed to within 27-26 at the
break when thanks to a pair of three-pointers by Ryan Roa and a Vinny
Baumunk three-pointer at the buzzer.
In the second stanza, the Cougars would take their first lead of the
game at 34-33 on a bucket by Baumunk with 15:30 remaining.
The teams would trade lead seven times and played to a tie score on four
other occasions. With the game tied a 46-46 with 6:05 left, the Cougars
would use a pair of foul shots by Baumunk to take a 48-46 advantage with
4:54 on the clock. King's would tie the score at 48-48 on a lay-up by
John Soboleski at 4:32.
After a Cougar miss, Jamie Cousart score back-to-back buckets to give
the Monarchs a 52-48 lead with 2:19 remaining. Baumunk would bring
Misericordia to within 52-50 with a basket with 1:26 left. But
King's countered when Cousart canned a pair of foul shotwwith 0:18 left
to give the Monarchs a 54-50 lead.
Matt Hornak would miss a three-pointer for the Cougars with 0:04 on the
clock and Chris Hacker rebounded for King's to seal the victory.
Cousart, who scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half, was 6-of-13
from the field and added six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. John
Soboleski follwed with 13 points and six rebounds while Dwebeng added 11
points and four boards. Scalzo chipped in with nine points and four
assists.
Baumunk led the Cougars with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Roa added
14 points and four assists. Hornak contributed seven points and four
rebounds while Andy Smith tallied six points.
