WILKES-BARRE CHALLENGE SET TO OPEN SATURDAY

WILKES-BARRE -- King's College will serve as host to the 2008 Wilkes-Barre Challenge beginning Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

The first game will feature Wilkes University against Tufts University at 6:00 p.m.  King's will then play Misericordia at 8:00 p.m.

On Sunday, Wilkes and Misericordia will square off at 1:00 p.m. while King's and Tufts play at 3:00 p.m.

The King's College men's basketball team enters the Wilkes-Barre Challenge with a 5-4 record after a 76-73 loss to York on Wednesday ... Senior point-guard Jamie Cousart tops the squad with 16.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists ... Senior forward Vince Scalzo follows with 13.6 points and 5.1 rebounds with 12 three-pointers ... Senior center John Soboleski contributes 10.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 17 blocked shots ...Senior guard Kofi Dwebeng nets 6.9 points with 3.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 15 three-pointers ... Senior guard-forward Jim Welsh adds 6.8 points with 18 three-pointers ... Freshman center-forward Kevin Conroy has tallied 6.3 points and 2.3 rebounds ... Senior forward Ryan Nenstiel posts 5.3 points and 2.6 rebounds with eight treys ... Sophomore guard Mike Wagner averages 3.5 point with five treys ... Sophomore forward Jim Schule chips in with 2.7 points and 2.9 rebounds ... King's averages 73.8 points per-game while allowing 70.6.

The Wilkes University men's basketball team stands at 3-4 entering the Wilkes-Barre Challenge after a 67-52 loss to Kean University in its last game on December 19 ... The Colonels are led by sophomore forward Tom Kresge who enters the event averaging 13.4 points and 7.0 rebounds ... Junior forward Steve Kline follows with 11.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per-game ... Freshman guard Chris DeRojas adds 10.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 13 three-pointers ... Senior guard Matt Gould contributes 8.4 points, 2.7 assists, and 2.8 steals ... Sophomore guard Chris Gulla tallies 8.1 points and 4.0 rebounds ... Sophomore forward Anthony Gabriel registers 6.6 points and 3.1 rebounds ... Junior center John Defeo chips in with 5.1 points with 5.1 rebounds ... The Colonels average 65.9 points per-game, while allowing 71.4 each contest.

The Misericordia University men's basketball team enters the Wilkes-Barre Challenge with a tournament-best 7-2 mark after a 73-68 win over Susquehanna on December 6 ... The Cougars are led by senior forward Vinny Baumunk with 17.2 points and 6.3 rebounds ... Senior guard Ryan Roa follows with 11.6 points 5.6 assists, 2.3 rebounds, and 16 three-pointers ... Sophomore forward Dom Del Prete adds 10.2 points and 4.9 rebounds ... Senior forward Matt Hornak contributes 9.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.2 assists with nine treys ... Sophomore guard Marcus Little tallies 5.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 3.2 assists ... Freshman guard Robbie Johnson has registered 4.9 points and 2.4 boards ... Junior guard Marqus Hunter chips in with 3.9 points ... The Cougars average 67.9 points per-game, while allowing 56.2 each contest.

The Tufts University Jumbos of Meford, Massachusetts enter the Wilkes-Barre Challenge with a 6-2 record after posting an 86-64 win over Plymouth State in its last game on December 11 ... Entering the tournament, the Jumbos have been led by junior forward John Pierce with 22.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 19 three-pointers while shooting 59.5 percent from the field ... Senior forward Jake Weitzen follows with 13.0 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 3.6 assists ... Senior guard Jeremy Black adds 12.3 points, 3.4 assists, and 5.4 assists with 23 treys ... Senior guard Ryan O'Keefe tallies 10.4 points and 3.3 rebounds ... Junior guard Aaron Gallant posts 9.4 points with 2.3 rebounds ... Senior forward Pat Sullivan registers 4.1 points and 3.3 rebounds while sophomore forward Dave Beyel chips in with 4.0 points and 2.0 rebounds ... Tufts averages 82.8 points per-game while allowing 75.6 each contest.
