YORK MEN EDGE KING'S 76-73
WILKES-BARRE -- Senior all-American Chad McGowan
scored a game-high 23 points and the King's College men's basketball
team shot a dismal 50-percent from the foul line as visiting York
College posted a 76-73 victory over the Monarchs Wednesday in Scandlon
Gymnasium.
With the win, York improved to 6-4 while King's fell to 5-5.
The teams played on even terms throughout the first half but the
Monarchs paid for a mental error. With King's in possession and coach
J.P. Andrejko calling for one shot, senior point-guard Jamie Cousart
rushed a three-pointer with 0:15 left in the half. York would rebound
the missed shot and Jeremy Keefer banked in a three-pointer with 0:01 on
the clock to give the Spartans a 43-42 halftime lead.
In the second stanza King's opened with a 9-3 surge to take a 51-46 lead
on back-to-back baskets by John Soboleski. After four lead changes
and three ties, York would take the lead for good when McGowan scored
down low to give the Spartans a 63-61 lead with 8:38 on the clock. The
bucket would ignite a 11-4 York surge as the Spartan lead grew to 72-65
on a three-pointer from Nick Brady with 3:19 remaining.
King's would fight back and use five straight points from Ryan Nenstiel
to cut the lead to 74-73 with 0:37 left. Nate Lankford would give York a
75-73 lead when he made the first of two foul shots, but McGowan
registered an important offensive rebound for the Spartans and was
fouled with 0:08 on the clock. McGowan made one-of-two foul shots
to push the score to 76-73 to give the Monarchs one last chance.
Cousart would take a three-pointer with 0:03 remaining but the ball
bounded off the rim and into the arms of McGowan as time expired.
King's shot a solid 47.3 (26-55_ percent from the floor but hurt itself
by shooting just 50 (14-28) percent from the foul line. York made
50.0 (27-54) percent of its shots from the field while converting 70.0
(14-20) percent from the charity stripe.
Soboleski led King's with 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting while hauling in
11 rebounds, four assists, and four blocks. Vince Scalzo contributed 19
points while Cousart added 12 points and three assists. Nenstiel and
Kevin Conroy chipped in with seven points each.
McGowan led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting while Levi
Winters and Lankford followed with 13 and 11 points respectively.
