King's College - 2008 Freedom Conference Champions
The
men's varsity basketball team has enjoyed a successful history showered
with tradition since its first season in 1946.
From past stars such as Tom McLaughlin, '50; Tom Hamm, '66; George
Aldrich, '82; Ed Moyer, '87; Dave Miller, '91; Jeff Thomas, '92;
Rich Yanoski, '94; Steve Mayernick, '95, Brian Horgan, '05, and all-time
leading scorer Corey Dickerson, '01 (2,059 points), King's men's basketball
has produced numerous standouts in its rich past.
Since King's joined the Middle Atlantic Conference in 1978 the Monarchs
have produced 33 conference all-stars.
Six Monarchs have additionally been named conference most valuable player,
including Aldrich (1982), Miller (1990), Yanoski (1994), Mayernick (1995),
Dickerson (2000), and Horgan (2005).
The Monarchs enter the 2007-08 season as the defending Freedom
Conference champions, having captured the conference crown two of the
last three years while earning NCAA Division III national tournament
berths both seasons.
King's enjoyed its finest year in 2004-05 when the Monarchs won its
second MAC Freedom Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA
Division III National Tournament "Elite Eight" to finish with
a 24-6 record. Brian Horgan was named the conference player of the year,
the conference tournament most valuable player, and was a third-team
NCAA Division III All-American.
King's earned three straight NCAA national tournament berths in 1990-92.
In 1991, the team won the "old" MAC Northeast League
championship, while the 1990 squad was the overall MAC North champion.
King's also won the first-ever MAC Freedom League title in 1994.
In
2000-01, the Monarchs won the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern
Region championship and concluded a 19-9 record. In the process, Corey
Dickerson became the program's all-time leading scorer with 2,059
points while signing a professional contract to play in Ireland.
The Monarchs began a new era in 2001-02
with the hiring of J.P. Andrejko as
head coach. A former first-team All-American at the University of Scranton,
Andrejko led the Royals to the NCAA Division III National Tournament
championship game as a senior and had served as the top assistant at
Scranton for five years prior to his arrival at King's.
In his first six years at King's, Andrejko has led the team to six
consecutive MAC Freedom Conference playoff berths; three
20-win seasons; the 2005 and 2007 MAC Freedom Tournament championship; the 2001-02 MAC Freedom regular-
season title; and a second-place finish
in the 2002 ECAC Southern Region
Championships. Since his first season in 2001-02, Andrejko
has produced 13 MAC Freedom Conference all-star performers.
The Monarchs have also done the job in the class room. Since 2000,
King's has had 28 players named to the MAC All-Academic team for posting
a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade-point average.
King's plays a 25-game regular-season slate and at least two tournaments,
including the annual Ramada Inn/Monarch Classic in early January and
a tip-off-tournament. King's and cross-town rival Wilkes
have also alternated hosting the Wilkes-Barre Challenge where two
out-of-town colleges are invited to come to Wilkes-Barre to face King's
and Wilkes in round-robin games.
King's plays its home games in Scandlon
Gymnasium, a 3,200-seat facility which stands as one of
the largest in the MAC.
