MONARCHS DOWN FDU-FLORHAM 5-0 IN OPENING ROUND OF FREEDOM TOURNEY
QUAKERTOWN -- The second-seeded King's College baseball team broke
open a scoreless game with a five-run fifth inning as the Monarchs
posted a 5-0 victory over third-seeded FDU-Florham Friday at
Quakertown Memorial Park.
King's, which improved to 28-9 on the year, advances to Saturday's
second round game where the Monarchs face cross town rival Wilkes
University at 2:30 p.m. Fourth-seeded Wilkes upset top-seeded
DeSales 4-3 in 11 innings in the other first-round game on Friday.
With King's pitcher Caleb Calarco and FDU ace Ryan Flannery locked
in a scoreless pitcher's duel, the Monarchs broke the game open in
the bottom half of the fifth inning. Matt Livoy would smack a
one-out triple to the right centerfield gap. After Vince Budzyn
reached base on an infield single, J.R. Graver would drive in the
first run of the game with an infield grounder when Livoy beat the
throw to home plate. Calarco would then draw a walk, setting the
stage for the biggest play of the game.
Monarch senior
outfielder Mike Venarchick would step to the plate having struck out
swinging in his two previous at-bats. The King's standout would
make the most of his third plate appearance when he crushed a
Flannery offering deep over the left field fence for a grand slam
home run, giving King's a 5-0 lead.
Calarco would maintain control and kept the Devils off the board
until leaving after the eighth inning. Aaron Deroba would pitch a
scoreless ninth, striking out two batters as the Monarchs walked
away with the win.
Calarco allowed six hits in eight innings, striking out six batters
and walking just one. He also helped himself at the plate, going
2-for-3 with one run scored. Budzyn went 2-for-4 with a run to and
combined with Calarco to record four of King's nine base hits.
Joey Santillo led FDU with a 3-for-4 effort while Jimmy Sheppard
added two hits. Flannery (6-1) suffered his first loss of the
season, yielding five earned runs on nine hits while striking out
seven batters.
