GIOVANNOLI TOSSES THREE-HITTER AS MONARCHS DOWN MUHLENBERG 4-0

WILKES-BARRE  -- Senior pitcher Paul Giovannoli (left) tossed a nine-inning three-hitter as the King's College baseball team posted a 4-0 victory over visiting Muhlenberg College Friday at Betzler Fields.

With the win, King's improved to 24-9 on the year and moved to within one victory of equaling the single-season school record for victories of 25 set just last season.  Muhlenberg, meanwhile, fell to 8-23.

King's pushed a cross a run in the first inning when J.R. Graver reached base on an error and moved to second on a base hit by Jon Venarchick.  Caleb Calarco would then deliver an RBI single up the middle to get the Monarchs on the board.

In the third inning, Graver would launch a solo home run, his first of the season. over the left centerfield fence to push the score to 2-0.

King's added another run in the fourth when Mike Venarchick walked an advanced to second on a base hit by Pat McGlynn. After Josh Faust reached base on a bunt single to load the bases, Jeremy Faust lofted a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Venarchick for a 3-0 Monarch lead.

The Monarchs would tack on the final run in the sixth inning when McGlynn singled and stole second base. Two batters later Jeremy Faust would double to right centerfield to drive in McGlynn.

Giovannoli, meanwhile, did not allow a hit until the fourth inning as only seven Muhlenberg players hit the ball out of the infield.  Giovannoli (2-4) induced 16 infield ground outs in the game and walked just one batter while striking out two.

Calarco led King's by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Graver was 2-for-4 with two runs while McGlynn was also 2-for-4. Jeremy Faust went 1-for-3 while knocking in two runs.

King's returns to action Sunday when the Monarchs travel to meet Penn State Berks in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.

King's was originally slated to host Arcadia Sunday at 1:00 p.m. but the game was canceled when the Knights were forced play a previously conference game that had been rained out.
