KING'S BASEBALL TEAM DOWNS DESALES, 16-11, FOR 12TH STRAIGHT

WILKES-BARRE  -- The King's College baseball team built a 13-3 lead and held off a mild DeSales University rally late in the game as the Monarchs posted a 16-11 victory Friday in a Freedom Conference game at Betzler Fields.

With its 12th straight win of the season, King's improved to 19-3 overall and 10-1 in the Freedom Conference. DeSales, meanwhile, slipped to 14-8 and 7-2 in league play.

King's would score two run sin the first, another in the second, and one more in the third to build a 4-1 lead. After a scoreless fourth, DeSales pushed across two runs in the fifth to close to within 4-3.  The Monarchs, however, responded with six runs in the bottom of the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 13-3 lead.

DeSales would score three in the seventh and two in the eighth to close to within 13-8, but King's answered with three in the bottom of the eighth to forge ahead 16-8. DeSales pushed across three runs in the ninth but would draw no closer.

Matt Livoy led King's by going 4-for-4 with a double, triple, and two RBI. Mike Venarchick was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Caleb Calarco went 2-for-6 and scored three runs while Jeremy and Josh Faust added two hits each. Vince Budzyn was 1-for-4 with three RBI. Pat McGlynn was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Freshman Eric Matula picked up the win for King's, tossing six and one-thirds innings, allowing 11 hits and six runs with seven strikeouts.

DeSales was led by Matt Connors and Greg Treat with three hits each. Starting pitcher James Niesuchouski took the loss, allowing nine runs, six earned, on 10 hits.

The teams will square off Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in a doubleheader at DeSales in Center Valley.
