KING'S BASEBALL SWEEPS DVC TO IMPROVE TO 17-3

WILKES-BARRE -- J.R. Graver delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the King's College baseball team to a 4-3 victory over Delaware Valley College in the second game of a Freedom Conference doubleheader, allowing the Monarchs to register a sweep Monday at Betzler Fields.

With the victories, King's improved to 17-3 overall and 9-1 in league play.  Delaware Valley fell to 4-10 and 0-6.

With the nightcap tied at 3-3, designated hitter Pat McGlynn would draw a leadoff walk. After a sacrifice bunt by Vince Budzyn advanced pinch runner Phil Moskowitz to second base, Graver stroked a one-out single to bring home the winning run.

Graver and Mike Venarchick led King's in the opener with two hits each while Eric Matula (3-0) picked up the win, tossing two innings of scoreless relief of starter Paul Giovannoli, who allowed five hits and three unearned runs in five innings of work.

In the opener, King's trailed 2-0 in the fourth inning but scored five runs with two outs to secure the win. Matt Livoy would single and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Adam Depko then stroked a RBI triple to get King's on the board. Budzyn would follow with a run scoring single before Graver belted an RBI double to right centerfield to give the Monarchs a 3-2 lead. Jon Venarchick followed with an RBI double down the right field line, prior to a run scoring single form Caleb Calarco as King's took a 5-2 lead.

Calarco led King's with two hits and was also the winning pitcher, tossing six innings and scattering seven base hits while striking out seven batters. Mark Yankowski pitched a hitless seventh to seal the victory.

King's will next travel to face Marywood University Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in Scranton
