KING'S BASEBALL
SQUAD POSTS DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF
WILKES
WILKES-BARRE --
The King's College baseball team used a balanced effort over the course
of two games as the Monarchs posted a doubleheader sweep of cross-town
rival Wilkes University in a Freedom Conference doubleheader Sunday at
Betzler Fields.
King's won the first game 6-1 , then captured the nightcap 10-3.
With the sweep, King's improved to 15-3 overall and 7-1 in Freedom
Conference play. Wilkes, meanwhile, dropped its fifth straight
game, falling to 9-7 and 3-5 in league action.
In the opener, King's took a 1-0 lead in the second when Jeremy Faust
walked, moved to third on a double by twin brother Josh Faust, and then
scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Livoy. The Monarchs added a run in the
third when Caleb Calarco singled, moved to second on a base hit by Mike
Venarchick, then scored on a base hit to centerfield by Jeremy Faust.
Wilkes scored its lone run in the fourth inning when Mike McAndrew
tripled and scored on an infield ground out by Chris Mayerski.
The Monarchs would put the game away with four runs in the fifth inning
when Jon Venarchick singled and Caleb Calarco reached base on a Wilkes
error. Jeremy Faust would walk to load the bases, before Josh Faust was
hit by a pitch to plate Venarchick. Calarco would then score on an
infield grounder before Eric Matula smacked a two-run double to give the
Monarchs a 6-1 lead it would not surrender.
Jon Venarchik led King's by going 2-for-4 while Livoy and Matula drove
in two runs each. Calarco, meanwhile, was solid on the mound, tossing a
complete-game six-hitter while striking out seven batters and walking
just one. He improved to 4-0 with the victory.
McAndrew led Wilkes by going 2-for-3 and scoring the lone Colonel run.
Tom Buckler (1-1) took the pitching loss, allowing six runs, three
earned over four and two-third innings.
In the nightcap, Wilkes would take a 1-0 first inning lead when Kyle
Follweiler doubled and scored on a double by Corey Helfrich.
King's answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning when J.R.
Graver doubled and Jon Venarchick reached base on an error. Calarco then
delivered an RBI single, followed by a run-scoring single from Jeremy
Faust.
King's tacked on four more runs in the second when Livoy drew a leadoff
walk and Pat McGlynn followed with a single to centerfield. After Vince
Budzyn was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Jon Venarchick cleared the
bases with a three-run double to right centerfield. Mike
Venarchick would follow up a run scoring single to give the Monarchs a
6-1 lead.
Wilkes would score two runs in the fifth when Follweiler singled and
Mayerski followed with an RBI double to left centerfield. Matt LoPresto
then came through with a run-coring single to cut the Monarch lead to
6-3.
But King's would immediately respond in the bottom of the fifth when
Josh Faust singled and Matt Livoy walked. Budzyn followed with an RBI
single before Graver added another run scoring single to push the
Monarch lead to 8-3.
The Monarchs tacked on two more runs in the sixth when Calarco reached
base on an error and later scored on a single by Jeremy Faust.
After Jeremy Faust moved to second on a wild pitch, Josh Faust belted a
run-scoring double to left centerfield to drive in the final run of the
game.
Jeremy Faust led King's 13-hit attack by going 2-for-4 with two RBI,
while Graver, Calarco, and Josh Faust were all 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Freshman pitcher Dan Jenkins improved to 3-0 by scattering nine
hits over seven complete innings, striking out five batters without
yielding a walk.
Follweiler led Wilkes by going 2-for-4 with two runs while Helfrich and
LoPresto also added two hits each. John Milius (0-1) was the losing
pitcher, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on 11 hits over five innings
of work.
King's will return to action on Thursday when the Monarchs travel to
Doylestown to face Delaware valley College in a 3:00 p.m. contest.
King's will then host Delaware Valley Monday in a 1:00 p.m.
doubleheader.
