KING'S BASEBALL DOWNS MISERICORDIA
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College baseball team banged out 18 base
hits en route to a 14-5 victory over visiting College Misericordia
Wednesday at Betzler Fields. With the win, KIng's improved to 10-3
on the year while Misericordia slipped to 1-14.
Misericordia would take a 2-0 first inning lead on an RBI triple from
Mike D'Amara, who would later score on an infield ground out by Brandon
Calafut. The Cougars would add a run in the third when D'Amara
singled and eventually scored on an infield ground out by Ryan Savka.
The Monarchs would answer with two runs in the third inning when J.R.
Graver walked and scored from second on an RBI single by Caleb Calarco.
After Calarco stole second, Jon Venarchick followed with an RBI single
to cut the Misericordia lead to 3-2.
King's added two more runs in the fourth when Gracjan Kraszewski reached
base on a two-out error, stole second base, and scored on an RBI single
off the bat of Matt Colgan. Jon Venarchick would then stroke a run
scoring single to give the Monarchs a 4-3 lead.
The Cougars would tie the score with a run in the sixth when Calafut
doubled and later scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Jamie
Philippi.
The Monarchs countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth
when Kraszewski doubled and scored on another double by Graver. Mike
Venarchick would come through with an RBI single to give the Monarchs a
6-4 lead.
After each team scored a run in the seventh, King's exploded in the
eighth with seven runs to put the game out of reach. The big blows were
a two-run single by Matt Livoy, a run scoring double from Matt Unger, and
RBI's from Jeremy Faust and Matt Colgan.
Mike Venarchick posted three hits and two RBI for
King's while Colgan went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Calarco, Graver, Jeremy Faust,
and Kraszewski added two hits each for the Monarchs. Aaron Deroba
(2-0) picked up the win for KIng's in relief of starter J.T. Levonick.
D'Amara led Misericordia with three hits while Rob Lanfrank added a pair
of hits. Darren Morgan took the loss for the Cougars.
King's will return to action Friday when the Monarchs travel to face
Drew University at 3:30 p.m. King's and Drew will then play a
doubleheader Saturday at 12:00 noon at Betzler Fields.
