KING'S BASEBALL DOWNS MISERICORDIA

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College baseball team banged out 18 base hits en route to a 14-5 victory over visiting College Misericordia Wednesday at Betzler Fields.  With the win, KIng's improved to 10-3 on the year while Misericordia slipped to 1-14.

Misericordia would take a 2-0 first inning lead on an RBI triple from Mike D'Amara, who would later score on an infield ground out by Brandon Calafut.  The Cougars would add a run in the third when D'Amara singled and eventually scored on an infield ground out by Ryan Savka.

The Monarchs would answer with two runs in the third inning when J.R. Graver walked and scored from second on an RBI single by Caleb Calarco. After Calarco stole second, Jon Venarchick followed with an RBI single to cut the Misericordia lead to 3-2.

King's added two more runs in the fourth when Gracjan Kraszewski reached base on a two-out error, stole second base, and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Matt Colgan. Jon Venarchick would then stroke a run scoring single to give the Monarchs a 4-3 lead.

The Cougars would tie the score with a run in the sixth when Calafut doubled and later scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Jamie Philippi.

The Monarchs countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth when Kraszewski doubled and scored on another double by Graver. Mike Venarchick would come through with an RBI single to give the Monarchs a 6-4 lead.

After each team scored a run in the seventh, King's exploded in the eighth with seven runs to put the game out of reach. The big blows were a two-run single by Matt Livoy, a run scoring double from Matt Unger, and RBI's from Jeremy Faust and Matt Colgan.

Mike Venarchick posted three hits and two RBI for King's while Colgan went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Calarco, Graver, Jeremy Faust, and Kraszewski added two hits each for the Monarchs.  Aaron Deroba (2-0) picked up the win for KIng's in relief of starter J.T. Levonick.

D'Amara led Misericordia with three hits while Rob Lanfrank added a pair of hits.  Darren Morgan took the loss for the Cougars.

King's will return to action Friday when the Monarchs travel to face Drew University at 3:30 p.m. King's and Drew will then play a doubleheader Saturday at 12:00 noon at Betzler Fields.
