KING'S BASEBALL SPLITS FDU-FLORHAM
MADISON,
NJ -- Caleb Calarco (left) tossed a complete-game five hitter and Mike
Venarchick scored the only run of the game in the second inning as the
King's College baseball team posted a 1-0 victory over host FDU-Florham
to salvage a split in the 2007 Freedom Conference opener for both teams
Monday in Madison.
King's, the defending Freedom Conference champions, was playing its
first games since March 10 due to the recent snowstorm in Northeastern
Pennsylvania. The Monarchs dropped the opener to FDU by a 7-3
count.
In the nightcap, King's (8-3) scored the only run it would need in the
second inning when Mike Venarchick singled and later moved to third
base. Venarchick would then score when the Devils failed to
convert a one-out double play that would have ended the inning.
The run was all the Monarchs would need behind the arm of Calarco, who
pitched all seven innings and struck out seven batters.
FDU (6-4) would take the opener when the Devils scored seven runs, five
that were earned over King's top hurler Paul Giovannoli. Mike Venarchick
was 2-for-3 with two RBI while Jon Venarchick went 2-for-4 with a run
scored. Pat McGlynn finished 2-for-2 with one run and a double. Calarco
also added an RBI single while Josh and Jeremy Faust added base hits for
King's.
King's and FDU-Florham will complete their three-game season series
Tuesday in Wilkes-Barre when the teams play a nine-inning contest at
3:30 p.m. at Betzler Fields.
