KING'S BASEBALL TEAM TAKES TWO FROM DESALES
(Monarchs Go 3-0 Versus Six-Time defending Freedom Champs)
WILKES-BARRE -- Rob Medlock
and Caleb Calarco each tossed complete-game four-hitters to lead the
King's College baseball team to an important doubleheader sweep over
defending Freedom Conference champion DeSales University Monday at
Betzler Fields.
King's won the first game 6-4, then took the nightcap by a 5-1 count.
With the sweep, the Monarchs improved to 16-10 overall and 10-3 in
conference play. The sweep also allowed King's to win the season
series with a 3-0 mark against DeSales. The Bulldogs, who have won the
last six Freedom Conference titles, slipped to 14-13 and 6-4 on the
year.
The game also marked the 700th career coaching win for Monarch mentor
Jerry Greeley, combining his victories at King's, Penn State
Wilkes-Barre, and Orlowski's collegiate/semi-pro teams.
In the opener, DeSales took a 1-0 lead on unearned run in the first
inning. The Monarchs answered with three runs in the bottom of the
inning when Jon Venarchick and Caleb Calarco singled and Matt
Livoy then followed with a run-scoring single to tie the score at 1-1.
After Mike Venarchick reached base on a fielder's choice, Jeremy Faust
delivered an RBI single. King's would take a 3-1 lead when Mike
Venarchick later scored from third on an error.
The Monarchs added run in the second when Josh Faust and eventually
scored from third base on a wild pitch.
After DeSales scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth, King's
answered right back with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning.
J.R. Graver was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a two-out single
by Livoy.
DeSales would add another unearned run in the sixth, but King's again
responded when Josh Faust singled and moved to second on a sacrifice
bunt by Graver. Faust would move to third on an infield out, then scored
on a Bulldog error to give King's a 6-4 lead, its final margin of
victory.
Medlock was solid in yielding four hits and four unearned runs in the
contest while striking out three batters. Livoy was 2-for-2 with
two RBI while Josh Faust went 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
Two-time Freedom Conference "Pitcher of the Year" Matt Reppert took the
loss for DeSales, allowing six runs, three that were earned, on eight
hits. Matt Connors had two hits to pace the Bulldog offense.
In the nightcap, Calarco and DeSales starter J.T. Brotosky engaged in a
scoreless pitchers dual until the fifth inning. Brotosky did not
allow a base hit until the fifth when Nick Sorino and Josh Faust led off
with back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice bunt by Matt Colgan
advanced the runners. After an intentional walk to Calarco loaded the
bases with one out, Sorino would score on a wild pitch to give King's a
1-0 lead.
Two more Monarch runs would score following a DeSales error as King's
lead grew to 3-0. Mike Venarchick then launched a two-run home run well
over the right centerfield fence as King's took a 5-0 lead.
DeSales would tally its lone run in the sixth when Andrew Heard scored
on a sacrifice fly by Scott Matejicka.
Calarco improved to 5-1 with the pitching decision, allowing four hits
and one earned run while striking out five batters. Sorino paced King's
five-hit attack with two hits while Matt Colgan also added a hit for the
Monarchs.
Brotosky pitched well for DeSales, allowing five hits and five runs,
only one which was earned, while striking out two.
King's will next travel to Doylestown to face Delaware Valley College in
an important conference doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
