KING’S BASEBALL DOWNS DESALES, 8-7
CENTER VALLEY –
The King’s College baseball team overcame deficits of 3-0 and 503 as
the Monarchs came from behind to earn an 8-7 victory over DeSales
University in an important Freedom Conference game Thursday in
Center Valley.
With the win, King’s improved to 14-10 overall and 8-3 in conference
play. DeSales, the six-time defending Freedom Conference champion,
slipped to 13-11 and 6-2 in league action.
DeSales would push
across the game’s first runs in the third inning. Derek Miller
posted a leadoff single and Matt Connors followed with a triple down
the right field line to plate Miller and give the Bulldogs a 1-0
lead. Andrew Heard would then reach base on an infield error,
advancing to second on the miscue. DeSales would attempt a double
steal and another Monarch error allowed Connors to score. Mike
Bianca then delivered an RBI single to right field to bring in Heard
for a 3-0 lead.
King’s would get
on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Josh Faust led off the
fifth with a walk and moved to third on a single by Jon Venarchick.
J.R. Graver would then single to center to bring home Faust and cut
the lead to 3-1. After Caleb Calarco advanced the runners with a
sacrifice bunt, Mike Venarchick delivered a two-run single to center
to tie the game at 3-3.
DeSales, however,
would recapture the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Bianca
reached base on a one-out single. Matejicka would follow with an RBI
double down the right field line, then eventually scored from third
on King’s third error of the contest, giving the Bulldogs a 5-3
lead.
King’s would counter in the sixth when Jeremy Faust and Nick Sorino
led off with back-to-back singles. Josh Faust would bunt and reached
base on a throwing error, allowing Jeremy Faust to score from second
to bring the score to 5-4. Sorino would then score on DeSales’
second error of the inning to even the game at 5-5. Calarco then
delivered an RBI single to right field to give the Monarchs a 6-5
lead.
King’s would add
to its lead in the seventh when Medlock led off with a bloop single
to center and advanced to second when Jeremy Faust was hit by a
pitch. After Sorino moved the runners ahead with a sacrifice bunt,
Jon Venarchick’s infield grounder to second base was misplayed as
two more Monarch runners would score, giving King’s an 8-5 lead.
Miller would
attempt to rally DeSales with a leadoff triple in the bottom half of
the eighth inning. Treat then followed with an RBI single to cut the
King’s lead to 8-6.
In the ninth, Matejicka led off for DeSales with a double to right
field. Pennington would follow with an RBI single too cut the
Monarch lead to 8-7. After a pair of infield outs, Pennington would
move to second on a wild pitch. But Monarch relief pitcher Rob
Medlock would strike out Miller to end the contest.
Calarco led the
Monarchs with a 3-for-6 effort and an RBI. Mike Venarchick was
2-for-5 with two RBI while Livoy, Graver, Jeremy Faust, and Jon
Venarchick all had two hits each for the Monarchs. Paul Giovannoli
improved to 4-1 with the pitching victory, going seven innings and
allowing six runs, four earned, on 10 hits. Medlock picked up the
save in tossing the final two innings.
Bianca, Matejicka and Miller had two hits each for the Bulldogs. J.T.
Brotsky was the losing pitcher in relief for DeSales.
The teams will meet again Monday in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at
King’s Betzler Fields.
