KING'S BASEBALL DOWNS DELAWARE VALLEY, SETS UP SHOWDOWN WITH DESALES

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College baseball team prepped for its Freedom Conference showdown with defending champion DeSales as the Monarchs banged out 15 base hits to post an important 12-6 victory over Delaware Valley College Monday at Betzler Fields.

With the win, King's improved to 13-10 overall and 7-3 in Freedom Conference play. Delaware Valley slipped to 9-11 and 1-6 in league action.

Delaware Valley would take a 4-0 lead after its first at-bats, but the Monarchs would counter with two runs in its half if the inning when Jon Venarchick tripled and scored on a triple by Caleb Calarco. Matt Livoy then followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Calarco to cut the Aggie lead to 4-2.

The Monarchs then took the lead with five runs in the second inning when Josh Faust drew a one-out walk and Jon Venarchick walked with two down. Calarco, Livoy, Mike Venarchick, Jeremy Faust, and Rob Medlock combined to register five consecutive RBI singles for King's who took a 7-4 lead.

King's added two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh, and two more in the eighth to seal the victory.

Calarco was 4-for-5 with three RBI while Livoy went 2-for-4 with four RBI for the Monarchs. Mike Venarchick, Medlock, and J.R. Graver all had two hits each for the Monarchs while Jon Venarchick had one hits and scored three runs.

Calarco picked up the pitching victory, lasting five and one-third innings, allowing five runs on eight hits and struck out four batters. Paul Giovannoli tossed one and two-thirds of relief, allowing one unearned run. Medlock went the final two innings for the Monarchs, allowing just one hit.

King's will travel to Center Valley to face five-time defending champion DeSales at 3:30 p.m. The game will be televised by WCAU-TV 2 in the Lehigh Valley and will be aired to Service Electric Cable subscribers in Northeastern Pennsylvania on Channel 3.
