KING'S BASEBALL TEAM SPLITS WITH WILKES

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College baseball team rallied form a 7-2 deficit to post a 10-7 win over Wilkes in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday at Artillery Park. Wilkes won the second game 6-3.

With the split King's is 12-9 overall and 6-3 in Freedom Conference play while Wilkes stands at 6-9 overall and 2-7 in conference play.  King’s is now 12-9 overall and 6-3 in the conference.

In the opener King’s took a 1-0 lead when Jeremy Faust tripled and scored on a Sorino single in the second.  However, Wilkes bounced right back in their half of the frame to tie the game at 1-1.

The Monarchs would assume a 2-1 lead in the third.  Caleb Calarco and Matt Livoy singled with one out to put runners on first and second.  Rob Medlock would drive home Calarco with a single to account for the King’s run.

           
Wilkes would score four times in their half of the third to take a 5-2 lead.  The Colonels added two more runs in the fifth to stretch the lead to 7-2.

           
King’s began to mount their comeback in the fifth inning.  Jon Venarchick singled and Calarco reached on a fielder’s choice to put runners on first and second with no outs.  Matt Livoy singled and the ball got by the Wilkes outfielder allowing both Venarchick and Calarco to score and Livoy to move to second.  Livoy went to third on a ground out by Rob Medlock and scored on a double by Jeremy Faust to cut the lead to 7-5.  Mike Venarchick would deliver a run-scoring single to score Faust and make it 7-6 after five innings. 

           
The Monarchs scored a single run in the top of the seventh to tie the game.  Mike Venarchick led off with a double and advanced to third on a Nick Sorino ground out.  After Josh Faust drew a walk to put runners on the corners, J.R. Graver was induced into a ground out to third, which allowed only Faust to move up a base.  After Faust was replaced at second by pinch-runner Phil Moskowitz, Jon Venarchick singled to right field.  Mike Venarchick scored, but Moskowitz was gunned down at the plate to keep the game tied at 7-7.

           
King’s scored three times in the eighth inning to secure the win.  With one out, Livoy tripled; Medlock then grounded out to third base, leaving Livoy at third with two outs.  Jeremy Faust would score Livoy with a single to give the Monarchs an 8-7 lead.  Mike Venarchick followed with a triple to score Faust and extend the lead to 9-7.  Venarchick would score the final run on a single by Sorino to make it 10-7.

           
John McNichol was the winning pitcher for King’s in relief of Medlock, who pitched the first six innings.  Mark Yankowski allowed only one hit in the eighth inning to pick up the save. 

           
Jon Venarchick led a 19-hit King’s attack with four hits, including a double and triple.  Mike Venarchick, Livoy and Jeremy Faust contributed three hits apiece.  Mike Venarchick and Faust had two RBI each.


In the first game, Wilkes scored a pair of two-out runs in the opening inning to grab a 2-0 lead.

           
King’s would score a single run in the second to cut the lead to 2-1.  Mike Venarchick singled and advanced to second on a walk by Josh Faust.  J.R. Graver would plate Venarchick with a single.

           
The Monarchs took the lead by using the long ball in the fourth.  With one out, Mike Venarchick cracked a solo homer to tie the game at 2-2.  Nick Sorino followed with another solo shot to give King’s a 3-2 advantage.

           
Wilkes fought back in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3 when Kyle Follweiler led off with a double and scored on a single by Chris Mayerski.

In the sixth, Wilkes' Kyle Stover drew a one-out walk , then moved to second on a ground out by Follweiler. Eric Wetzel was then issued a walk to put runners on first and second.  Mayerski followed with a three-run home run to give the Colonels a 6-3 lead.

           

Mike Venarchick and Graver had two hits each for King’s. Josh Faust took the loss in relief for the Monarchs.
